Kareena Kapoor’s first movie is Refugee in which she starred opposite debutant Abhishek Bachchan.
Though the film was a flop Kareena received a lot of praise for her acting while Abhishek received a lot of flak due to his comparison with Amitabh Bachchan.
After her walk-out from Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai Kareena secured her role in Refugee on the request of her father Randhir Kapoor.
Director J.P Dutta shared a professional and personal bond with Randhir Kapoor as he had previously worked as an assistant to him in Dharam Karam.
Kareena opted for a raw, natural look with minimal or no makeup for Refugee which helped to portray the innocence and the natural beauty of her character.
Before finalising Abhishek Bachchan, director J.P Dutta had approached Salman Khan for the lead role but he immediately denied it.
Abhishek Bachchan regretted debuting with this film as his family was pushing him into films because of the financial troubles that they were facing.
J.P Dutta was working on a film with Abhishek which was to be produced by ABCL but the project never took-off due to the bankruptcy of ABCL.
Kareena Kapoor won the Filmfare Best Female Debut award for her portrayal of Nazneen Ahmed in the film.
