How does the Devi Bhagavatam portray Parvati, and why do some interpretations contradict each other?

 The Devī Bhāgavatam is a Śākta oriented Purāṇa whose presiding deity is Devī Bhuvaneśvarī. It also portrays Bhagavatī Pārvatī as the Supreme Śakti.

■ It identifies Bhagwatī Pārvatī as nondifferent from Bhagwatī Bhuvaneśvarī like ❝धात्री धराधरसुते ~O Bhuvaneśvarī, O Daughter of the Mountain (Pārvatī).❞~3.4.41 ❝ अनंताक्षिमयं रूपं दर्शयामास पार्वती ~Pārvatī revealed a form composed of infinite eyes.❞~7.28.33 ❝ त्वं ह्रीः कीर्तिः स्मृतिः कान्तिः कमला गिरिजा सती । दाक्षायणी वेदगर्भा सिद्धिदात्री सदाऽभया । ~oh Devī mahāmāyā ! You are Hrī, Kīrti, Smṛti, Kānti ;You are Kamalā, Girijā (daughter of the mountain), and Satī.You are Dākṣāyaṇī, , vedagarbhā, siddhidātrī,and You grant fearlessness. ❞ ~8.1.32


■ Devī Bhāgavata Purāṇa describes Bhagavatī Pārvatī as both Parabrahman and Parāśakti. :-

❝रूपं मदीयं ब्रह्मतत्सर्वकारणकारणम् ~My own true form is Brahman, that which is the cause of all causes. ❞

❝ सा च माया परा शक्ति शक्तिमत्यहमीश्वरी ~That Māyā is Parāśakti and I am, the supreme sovereign Goddess, the very possessor and embodiment of that Power.❞~12.8.62–66.

■ She is the one whose feet grant liberation ❝संसारसागरोत्तारपोतीभूतपदाम्बुजे ~You are the one who lifts souls from the ocean of worldly existence, and whose lotus feet have become the very means of crossing the worldly ocean!❞ It also mentions :-

❝ ब्रह्मादयोऽपि विबुधास्त्वत्पादाम्बुजसेवया । विश्वसर्गस्थितिलयप्रभुत्वं समवाप्नुयुः ।।

Oh Devī !! Even Brahmā and the other wise gods attained lordship over the creation, maintenance, and dissolution of the universe by serving Your lotus-feet ❞ ~Devī Bhāgavatam Māhātmyam 3.46–47


■ She is pūrṇa-svarūpa of Parabrahman ❝नारायणी विष्णुमाया पूर्णब्रह्मस्वरूपिणी ~Devī Pārvatī is Nārāyaṇī, the sole refuge of all jīvas. She is Viṣṇu-māyā, the supreme Śakti of Śrīmān Viṣṇu. She is pūrṇa brahma svarūpiṇī , that Brahman in essence. ❞ ~9.1.14

■ She is the very embodiment of all powers, the eternal Śakti of the Lord. ❝ सर्वशक्तिस्वरूपा च शक्तिरीशस्य संततम् ~She is the very essence of all powers. She is the inseparable power of the Supreme Lord ❞ ~9.1.18

■ Everything is her manifestation :-

❝ बुद्धिर्निद्रा क्षुत्पिपासा छाया तंद्रा दया स्मृतिः । जातिः क्षांतिश्च भ्रांतिश्च शान्तिः कान्तिश्च चेतना ॥तुष्टिः पुष्टिस्तथा लक्ष्मीधृतिर्माया तथैव च ।

Bhagwatī Umā is intellect, sleep, hunger and thirst; shadow, drowsiness, compassion, and memory. She is jātiḥ, forbearance, delusion, peace, beauty, and consciousness itself. She is satisfaction, nourishment, prosperity (Lakṣmī), steadfastness, and also Māyā.❞ ~9.1.19–20


■ She is ❝ त्वमजरामरणेऽनघे ~O Devī !! You are free from decay, beyond birth and death, and absolutely pure or not bounde by actions ❞ ❝विष्णुशंकरब्रह्मादिस्वरूपेऽनंतविक्रमे ~You whose very essence appears as Viṣṇu, Śaṅkara, Brahmā, and all other deities, and whose power and might is beyond the mind.❞

Also ❝ सृष्टिस्थितिकरे नाशकारिके कांतिदायिनी । महातांडवसुप्रीते मोददायिनि माधवि ॥ ~O Pārvatī !! You are the One who performs creation and sustenance, and You are also the power that brings about dissolution. You are the bestower of radiance, beauty, and splendor, the luminous energy that illumines all existence. You are supremely delighted in the great Tāṇḍava which is performed by Lord Śiva. O Mādhavī, sister of Śrīmān Nārāyaṇaḥ, you are the giver of joy, bliss, and delight.❞ ~10.12.40 (Devakṛta Pārvatī Stuti) .

■ Devī Girijā is the embodiment of divine truth. The truth of the Ultimate Reality, the supreme consciousness. she is the embodiment of Consciousness. ❝तस्या नाम सतीं चक्रे सत्यत्वात्परसंविदः ~The wise Munis named Her 'Sati' as She was of the nature of Para Brahma and Truth Herself.❞ ~7.30.23

■ Devī Bhāgavatam mentioned Devī Pārvatī as the supreme Goddess, the controller of all and the empress of the universe.

❝मद्भयाद्वाति पवनो भीत्या सूर्यश्च गच्छति । इन्द्राग्निमृत्यवस्तद्वत्साऽहं सर्वोत्तमा स्मृता ।।

Out of fear of Me the wind blows; out of fear the sun moves on his course. So too Indra, Agni, and God of Death act therefore I am remembered as the Supreme.

मत्प्रसादाद्भवद्भिस्तु जयो लब्धोऽस्ति सर्वदा । युष्मानहं नर्तयामि काष्ठपुत्तलिकोपमान् ।।

Through My Grace you have obtained victory in the battle. Know, verily, that it is I that make you all dance like inert wooden dolls as My mere Instruments ❞ ~Devī Bhāgavatam 12.8.78–79

■ Devī Gaṇeśa Jananī Durgā is worshipped by all.

❝ वैष्णवानां च शैवानामुपास्येयं च नित्यशः । मूलप्रकृतिरूपा सा सृष्टिस्थित्यन्त्कारिणी ॥

She is worshipped by all, whether a Śaiva or a Vaisnava. She is the Müla Prakṛti and from Her the creation, preservation and destruction of the universe proceed.❞ ~9.50.56

■ The 108 Śakti Pīṭhas, where Devī is eternally present together with Bhagavān Śiva, were formed from the body of Devī Satī alone. Since Śiva can never be separated from Devī, He too assumed various forms to accompany Her. These Śakti Pīṭhas are the sacred places where Devī abides eternally for the sake of Her devotees.

❝ तत्तत्स्थानेषु तत्रासीन्नानामूर्तिधरो हरः । उवाच च ततो देवान्स्थानेष्वेतेषु यो शिवाम् ।।

At each of those places where Body parts of Devī Sati fell , Hara (Śiva) was present there, assuming many different forms.

भजंति परया भक्त्या तेषां किंचित्र दुर्लभम् । नित्यं सन्निहिता यत्र निजांगेषु पराम्बिका ॥

Bhagwan Śiva :- Those who worship Devī Śiva priyā in these very places with supreme devotion, for them nothing whatsoever is difficult to obtain. For the Supreme Mother is eternally present there, united with her own limbs.❞ ~7.30.47–48

■ She is beyond the description. No one knows the number of her names and forms. ❝ न ते नामसंख्यां न ते रूपमीदृ-क्तथा कोऽपि वेदादिदेवस्वरूपे । ~O Devī !! No one knows the number of Your names, nor is Your form of such a kind that it can be fully known न वा ते गुणानामियत्तां स्वरूपं वयं देवि जानीमहे विश्ववन्द्ये। ~O Devi, adored by all the worlds, we do not comprehend the full measure of Your attributes, nor the reality of Your own essential being❞ ~Devī Bhāgavatam 5.22.26&31

❝ अजः सृष्टिकर्ता मुकुन्दोऽवितायं हरो नाशकृद्वै पुराणे प्रसिद्धः। न किं त्वत्प्रसूतास्त्रयस्ते युगादौ त्वमेवासि सर्वस्य तेनैव माता ॥

Brahmā is renowned in the Purāṇas as the creator of the universe,Viṣṇu as its protector; and Śiva, indeed, as its destroyer. Yet these three were born from You at the beginning of the ages therefore You alone are the Mother of all..❞ ~Śrīmad Devī Bhāgavatam 5.222
