At the 13th National Awards, Guide was given the Certificate of Merit for the Third Best Hindi film (Dev Anand - Producer). Besides this, Dev Anand won the Filmfare Award in the Best Actor category for his performance as Raju, a charming tourist guide whose life transforms from a romantic entanglement and prison sentence into an unexpected spiritual journey.
Dev Anand was a clear winner though the other nominees were Dharmendra for Phool Aur Patthar and Dilip Kumar for Dil Diya Dard Liya.
In fact, Guide bagged 7 out of the 9 awards for which it was nominated. These include best film, best actress (Waheeda Rehman), best director (Vijay Anand), best dialogue (Vijay Anand), best story (R. K. Narayan) and Best Cinematography - Colour (Fali Mistry).
The two misses were Best Singer category where Lata Mangeshkar (Aaj phir jeene ki tamanna) lost to Mohammed Rafi (Baharon phool barsao - Suraj).
The other being the Best Music Director category where S. D. Burman lost to Shankar-Jaikishan for Suraj which was a major shock and a controversial decision.
