Jaya first saw Amitabh at the Pune Film Institute and was impressed by him as Harivansh Rai Bachchan's son.
Both of them developed deep affection for each other during the filming of Guddi where Hrishikesh Mukherjee formally introduced them on the set. Amitabh was originally cast as the main lead in Guddi and even shot for 10 days.
Their on-set romance grew during the making of Ek Nazar where they starred together as romantic leads.
Jaya was the first to recognise their budding love while Amitabh began truly realising his deep affection for her during the production of this film.
Both were already in love and deeply committed during the shooting of Zanjeer. It was a male-centric film and Jaya accepted the film partly as an excuse to spend more time with Amitabh. During the breaks on the sets of Zanjeer they used to spend time together and grew closer during their courtship.
Zanjeer released and was a blockbuster. A celebratory trip to London was planned with Jaya and friends which would have been Amitabh's first-ever trip abroad. Amitabh's father (Harivansh Rai Bachchan) insisted that they marry before going to London.
It was a swift decision. They married at a simple private ceremony at Jaya's home followed by their London trip that very night.
