Which works of art create optical illusions?

This installation is located at Cairo airport . It appears to consist of two large stones held together only by a rope. The upper stone seems to be supported solely by the rope.

Images of this artwork frequently circulate on social media. Often, misinformation is spread in the process.

For example, a common headline states that the Prophet Mohammed tied these two stones together many hundreds of years ago and they have remained in this form to this day.

That's utter nonsense, of course. The Prophet Muhammad has absolutely nothing to do with this artwork, which was only installed in 2008. I find it regrettable that such misinformation obscures the appreciation of the true artist.

The creator of this sculpture is Sha'ban Mohamed Abbas , an Egyptian artist who died in 2010 at the age of 41.

I don't know exactly how this installation works. Apparently, there's another, harder material inside the rope, presumably steel. Steel alone might be able to hold this weight, although it's also quite possible that the stones are hollow inside, or made of fiberglass or other lighter materials.
