Eat enough fresh pineapple, and the fruit will actually eat you back. It is packed with bromelain, a meat-tenderizing enzyme that can break down your tongue until it bleeds.
As you chew, this enzyme begins dissolving the protective mucous coating inside the mouth, attacking the surface tissues of the lips, tongue, and cheeks.
This enzymatic assault causes a raw, burning, or tingling sensation. Fortunately, stomach acid neutralizes bromelain once swallowed, and oral cells regenerate rapidly, typically healing the damage within a day. Cooking or canning pineapple denatures the bromelain, meaning only fresh fruit produces this effect.
Beyond a tenderized mouth, the primary consequence of eating excessive amounts of pineapple is gastrointestinal distress. The fruit is highly acidic and exceptionally rich in vitamin C. Consuming extreme doses of vitamin C, particularly alongside the fruit’s high dietary fiber content, frequently triggers diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramping, and severe heartburn.
Like many tropical fruits, pineapples are dense in simple carbohydrates. Eating an entire pineapple introduces over 80 grams of natural sugar to the bloodstream in a short period. This concentrated dose of fructose and glucose causes rapid blood sugar spikes, followed by a sudden metabolic crash.
Finally, the fruit's high acidity takes a toll on dental health. Pineapples maintain a low pH, typically ranging between 3.2 and 4.0. Prolonged exposure to this concentration of citric and malic acids softens tooth enamel, leaving teeth highly vulnerable to permanent erosion if brushed before saliva can neutralize the oral environment.
