Neem Karoli Maharaj ji was a rare mystic.
Name : He was born as Lakshmi Narayan Sharma into an affluent family of landlords.
His father Pandit Durga Prasad Sharma was a learned scholar of his time.
He was studying in Kashi , when his father arranged his marriage with Ram Beti.
His parents in law were also affluent land owners.
Monk : A popular legend claims that Maharaj ji left his home just after his marriage.
He reportedly became a monk of Dashnami Akhara and started intense Hanuman Sadhna.
He was proverbially blessed by Lord Hanuman ji to spread Rama Nama across the world.
Siddh : Once, while he was travelling in a train ,an arrogant railway employee asked him to get down.
This young sadhu smilingly said - “Perhaps, it won’t move now”.
The moment , he stepped off , the train miraculously did not move an inch.
When all efforts failed, railways authorities sought forgiveness from him.
The moment , he boarded the train, it suddenly started moving.
Neem Karoli : Since, this incident happened at the village of Neem Karoli , he became known as Neem Karoli Maharaj.
Later, his father brought him back to Akbarpur and asked him to take care of his wife.
But, he strongly declared - I will always remain loyal to Hanuman ji.
Throughout his life , he built and renovated many Hanuman shrines.
Saintliness : As a spiritual rule , he did not allow his family members to misuse his name.
He never made any disciple but had many devotees.
Like a true Jeewan Mukt , he remained free from attachments.
Being a selfless soul, he treated all with love, care and respect.
He ate very simple food , sat and slept on a plank and wore a simple dhoti and blanket.
He never owned an asset and had no disciple.
Simple : He always credited Lord Hanuman ji for every miracle or positive event.
He exhorted devotees to worship Lord Sita Ram and Hanuman ji
Maharaj ji never claimed to be Hanuman ji himself but rather a simple Hanuman Bhakt.
Perhaps, his simplicity that attracted known yogis, seers and public figures towards him.
