During the game of dice, the Pandavas lost the game and Yudhishtir staked his wife Draupadi. Dushyasan on the orders of his elder brother Duryodhan, dragged Draupadi who was then menstruating and clad in a single cloth into the assembly full of Kauravas and the Kuru elders and began to disrobe her. Draupadi initially relied on the wise elders of the assembly, and her 5 strong husbands for help. But they all disappointed her by their silence and inability to stop the heinous act.
Being in this pitiful condition, she cried to Lord Krishna for help; Her prayers moved Lord Krishna’s heart and he thwarted Dushyasana’s attempt to undress her by providing her an endless supply of sarees which covered her continuously, thus preserving her dignity.
