Why can't Ravana be able to lift the foot of Angad if he had lifted Kailash so easily?

To tell the truth Angad's foot had more weight than the whole of Kailaash and Bhagwan Shiv, AT THE MOMENT.

Think what would have happened if Angad's foot had been uplifted. What would had happened?

As Angad was a great devotee of Sri Raam if Angad's foot had been uplifted, The name of Shri Vishnu and the trust of the name would have been considered false. As Raam ji's name can never be false and Moksha giving as true as death, no one in the court of Raavan was able to lift Angad's foot. It wasn't just the weight of the foot it had the weight of all existence. No one can except Sri Raam himself can uplift the weight of the Brahmaanda itself.

As Raavan was a param devotee of Bhagwan Vishnu in reality if he would have uplifted Angad's foot it would have meant that Shri Ram's name is false.

And, if Raavan would have not uplifted it it would have been a black mark on devotion. It would have been an insult to Prabhu Bhakti, the basis of God and his devotees himself, the basis of the universe. Thus, Sri Raam didn't made Raavan even try to uplift Angad's foot. Angad himself retreated his foot and asked him to touch Sri Raam's foot not his.

If Shiv Tandava was written by Ravana, does it mean it was ultimately written by Valmiki?

So as per the legend, Ravana supposedly composed the Stotram depicting Shiva’s dance which is called as Tandava Stotram however, there is no real proof to say that he as such composed the Stotram. Yet, I give it the benefit of doubt as it is mentioned that he sung a praise of Lord Shiva which may or may not have been the Tandava Stotram.

Its mentioned that he sung various praises of Lord Mahadeva from various hymns and sacred texts which impressed the mighty god. Even if he was singing the Tandava Stotram, I do not think he composed the Shiv Tandav Stotram. The Stotram would have been existing before Ravana himself. He just recited the same Stotram to please Lord Shankara so that he can be forgiven for his arrogance.

Valmiki Ramayana Uttara Kanda - Mahadeva humbles Ravan

Then, O Rama, Mahadeva, the foremost of the Gods, as if in sport, pressed the mountain with his great toe and, at the same time, he crushed Ravana’s arms, that resembled pillars of granite, to the great consternation of all the counsellors of that Rakshasa. And he, in pain and fury, suddenly let forth a terrible cry, causing the Three Worlds to tremble, so that his ministers thought it to be the crash of thunder at the dissolution of the worlds!
Thereupon the Gods, with Indra at their head, stumbled on their way; the oceans became agitated, the mountains shook, and the Yakshas,
Vidyadharas and Siddhas cried out:—
‘What is this? Do you pacify Mahadeva, the Blue-throated One, the Lord of Uma; apart from Him, there is no refuge in the world, O Dashanana! By hymns and prostration seek refuge with Him, propitiated and gratified, Shankara will look on you with favour.’
“Hearing the words of his ministers, Dashanana, bowing before Him, worshipped the God Whose standard bears the bull, by the recitation of hymns and innumerable sacred texts. Thus did that titan lament for a thousand years.
Thereafter the Lord Mahadeva, propitiated, released the arms of Dashanana from under the mountain and addressed him saying:—
‘“I am gratified with your courage and endurance, O Dashanana!
When you wast imprisoned under the rock, you didst emit a terrible cry, striking terror in the Three Worlds. For this reason, O King, from now on your name shall be Ravana, and Celestials, Men, Yakshas and other Beings in the universe shall call you “Ravana”—“He who causes the worlds to cry out”. O Paulastya [i.e., Mahasena—The Lord of War, Karttikeya], follow the path that pleases you without fear, you have my sanction to depart.’

The origin of the Tandava dance is said to be when Ma Kali slew the demon Daruka. Its said that her rage could destroy the worlds, thats when Lord Shiva performed the dance of Tandava to please Bhavani devi.

Linga Purana 1.106

25-28. In order to propitiate her, the delighted tridentbearing lord of Devas performed the tāṇḍava dance at dusk, along with the ghosts and leaders of goblins. After quaffing the nectar-like dance of Śiva upto the throat [i.e. after enjoying the dance of Śiva very much] Parameśvarī danced in the midst of ghosts, happily along with Yoginīs. Devas all round, including Brahmā, Indra and Viṣṇu, bowed to and eulogised Kālī and then prayed to the goddess Pārvatī. Thus, the Tāṇḍava of the trident-bearing lord has been briefly mentioned to you. Others[5] are of the opinion that the Tāṇḍava of the lord is due to the Bliss of yoga.

The reason I am saying this is, after Ma Gauri had slain the demon Mahishasura, she worshipped Lord Shankara as Arunachaleshwara and mentioned his dance as the Tandava. This event happened before Ravana was even born which means the Stotram existed before Ravana’s birth and he merely would have recited it to impress Lord Shiva.

Skanda Purana 1.4.20.34

jaya saṃdhyāsamopetasaṃbhṛtānaṃdatāṃḍava |
jaya gīrvāṇagaṃdharvasiddhavidyādharārcita || 34 ||

34. Be victorious, O Lord, indulging in blissful Tāṇḍava dance at the advent of the time of dusk. Be victorious, O Lord, worshipped by Devas, Gandharvas, Siddhas and Vidyādharas.

Another reference to the Tandava comes from Banasura who was another devotee of Lord Shiva. He had a thousand arms and was an expert Veena player. To please Lord Shiva he played the Tandava while Lord Shiva danced. This actually might refer to the Tandava we know today.

Shrimad Bhagavat Purana 10.62.2

bāṇaḥ putra-śata-jyeṣṭho
baler āsīn mahātmanaḥ
yena vāmana-rūpāya
haraye ’dāyi medinī
tasyaurasaḥ suto bānaḥ
śiva-bhakti-rataḥ sadā
mānyo vadānyo dhīmāṁś ca
satya-sandho dṛḍha-vrataḥ

sa rājyam akarot purā
tasya śambhoḥ prasādena
kiṅkarā iva te ’marāḥ
sahasra-bāhur vādyena
tāṇdave ’toṣayan mṛḍam

Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Bāṇa was the oldest of the hundred sons fathered by the great saint Bali Mahārāja, who gave the whole earth in charity to Lord Hari when He appeared as Vāmanadeva. Bāṇāsura, born from Bali’s semen, became a great devotee of Lord Śiva. His behavior was always respectable, and he was generous, intelligent, truthful and firm in his vows. The beautiful city of Śoṇitapura was under his dominion. Because Lord Śiva had favored him, the very demigods waited on Bāṇāsura like menial servants. Once, when Śiva was dancing his tāṇḍava-nṛtya, Bāṇa especially satisfied the lord by playing a musical accompaniment with his one thousand arms.

There is another reference from the Linga Purana where all Apsara’s perform the Tandava dance to impress Lord Shiva.

Linga Purana 1.82

71-73a. May the celestial damsels and the goddesses, engaged in the worship of Śiva dispel my impurities—viz., Urvaśī, Menakā, Rambhā, Rati, Tilottamā, Sumukhī, Durmukhī, Kāmukī, Kāmavardhanī and other divine Apsarases in all the worlds and the goddesses who are highly purified by doing the Tāṇḍava dance for Śiva.

Did Ravana get his name from Lord Shiva later in his life?

Yes. Ravana got his name from Lord Shiva in his later life. As he was born to Kaikasi and Vishravas muni, he was initially named as Dashanana, or the one with ten heads. But then as he did penance of Brahmaji, he got the boon of not being killed by any devata or demons or supernatural beings. Brahma said, “So be it.” And later dashanana, grew arrogant by the boon given by Brahmaji. He snatched away Lanka from Kubera.

Initially Kubera asked Sage Vishravas for a place so that he could live. Sage Vishravas asked him to go to Lanka. During deva-daanava sangraama devatas defeated the daanavas and all the demons entered paataalaloka. Since then the golden Lanka was abandoned. Now, as per Sage Vishravas’s orders Kubera ruled over Lanka. So, dashanana snatched away the kingdom Lanka from kubera. Kubera then went to Alakapuri and ruled there. dashanana even snatched away Kubera’s pushpaka Vimana that Brahma gave him.

So, coming to the point, like this Dashanana tormented all and then he finally reached Kailasa where Mahadeva Lord Shiva resided. Dashanana was stopped by Nandeeshwara, the vehicle of Lord Shiva. At this Dashanana out of arrogance mocks Nandeeshwara by calling him “vaanar faced one”. At this Nandeeshwara cursed Dashanana that “let monkeys or vaanaras only be the reason of your death”. But Dashanana was unfazed by this too, because his arrogance was at peak.

He tried to show his arrogance by lifting the great Mount Kailasa. Lord Shiva seeing this, just pressed the ground with his toe. As a result of this, Dashanana’s hands were stuck under the huge Kailasa Parvata. Dashanana cried aloud and it was like a loud roar. He recited the Shiva Tandava stotra. Pleased by this stotra, Lord Shiva appeared and provided him the boon. Thus since Dashanana cried aloud out of pain, he was known as Ravana. From then he was known as Ravana and he became a very big devotee of Lord Shiva!

Hope this helps!

Why did Jatayu try to be a hero and fight with Ravana when he could have simply followed him to his kingdom and later helped Lord Rama more effectively?

After Sita said strong unbearable words to Lakshmana, he was shattered and prepared to depart in the direction from where 'Ha Lakshman’ sound had come in voice of Rama. He left Sita in the shelter of Vana-devata. Let the forest, creatures save Sita. He departed and Ravana arrived. Jatayu used to protect the hut of Rama. They had met earlier and exchanged how Jatayu and Dasaratha were sweet friends.

Jatayu was not any ordinary vulture. He had participated in deva-asura sangram with Dasaratha, against demons. But, now was an old bird. After Lakshmana left saying these words, it became duty of Jatayu to save Sita.

After Sita was kidnapped and shouted for help, Jatayu attacked Ravana. He fought bravely but Ravana had invincible sword of Shiva. He used it on the old bird and Jatayu fell on the ground.

Like an ideal father-in-law and ideal devotee of Rama and also as per request of Lakshmana, he fought bravely with Ravana.

What if he had followed? Lanka was not easy to enter and once entered, its impossible to stay alive. At this old age, even crossing such a big ocean of 100 Yojana was also not possible for him. With his information only, Rama could know that Sita has been kidnapped by Ravana.

End of Jatayu:

Jatayu left his body in the laps of Rama, head experiencing the loving hand touch of Rama and with his eyes he was staring the dark-bluish divine beauty. The final rites of his body was done by Rama himself.

An interesting commentary of Govindaraaja:

Sugreeva with his army was sitting on Mountains. They saw a lady being forcefully kidnapped and crying for help. They didn't help her. It's better to die for a good cause than to live a life of a coward and unrighteous. Neither did Baali did any favour. He was well capable to saving Sita as he had defeated Ravana in past. But, he remained quite and thus helped Ravana in his adharma.

Rama killed Bali hiding behind the trees the second time Sugreeva went to fight with him. If you are helping adharma by backdoor, you have no right to claim that you were killed by adharma.

Rama didn't save Sugreeva the first time. He was beaten brutally by Bali. Do you think Rama was unable to identify him? One who is being beaten in Sugreeva and stronger one is Bali. There are many other factors that Rama could have easily differentiated between both. Next day, Sugreeva approached Rama through Lakshmana and he was saved by Rama.

How strong was Ravana as a warrior?

Ravana was the strongest rakshasa of Treta yug because of the boon he recieved from Brahma.

Ravana had a boon from Brahma that no god or demon can defeat him in fight

Ravana replied, ‘May I never suffer defeat at the hands of gandharvas, gods, asuras, yakshas, rakshasas, serpents, kinnaras and demons.’

Indra , Vayu and Yama fled away from his mere presence .

Scared of being oppressed, they assumed the forms of other species. Indra turned into a peacock, Dharmaraja into a crow, the lord of treasures into a lizard and Varuna into a swan. Ravana, the lord of the rakshasas, approached the king and said, “Give me a fight or say that you have been vanquished by me.”

Ravana overpowered Indra in archery and broke his bow

Shakra stretched his large bow, which emitted an extremely large sound. The sound of it being twanged resounded in the ten directions. Indra stretched that great bow and brought down arrows that were as radiant as the sun on Ravana’s head. However, the mighty-armed Dashagriva remained there. He showered down arrows and dislodged Shakra’s bow. They fought against each other and showered down arrows in every direction. Nothing could be discerned then. Everything was covered in darkness.’

most people quote Sage Agastya,’s statement of Meghnad being powerful than Ravana and Kumbhkarana. but statements can never be taken literally.

If Meghnad was more powerful than Ravana then why did Vishnu take birth as Lord Rama to kill Ravana.

And the very point of Sri Rama’s birth was to kill Ravana and not his son. Sri Vishnu and Devas did not even care for the elimination of Indrajit or Kumbhkarana. Their aim was to kill Ravana only.

"Oh! Vishnu, on your taking birth as human through the wives of Dasharatha you eliminate Ravana in war, who has become exacerbating and thorny to all worlds, and who is otherwise not eliminable for gods. [1-15-21b, 22a]

- Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Khanda.

this alone proves how powerful Ravana was. Vishnu himself had to incarnate as Rama to kill him and Lord Rama was the strongest warrior of Ramayana.

Ravana was powerful enough to lift the three worlds. A feat that Adikavi Valmiki himself mentions.

Though he was able to lift up Himavat, Mandara and Meru mountains as also the Three Worlds with the Gods, he could not raise Lakshmana the younger brother of Bharata.

- Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Khanda, Sarga 59.

Apart from this Ravana lifted the Kailasha mountain along with Lord Shiva and Parvati as per Uttar Kand.

Ravana had all the missiles and Valmiki Ji himself mentions it in Aranya Khanda.

He who is a marksman of every divine missile, and an ever interdictor of Vedic-rituals, and who on going to the city named Bhogavati, the capital of Naga-s, and on defeating Vasuki, the King of Serpents, has abducted the dear wife of Taksha on molesting her, and Shuurpanakha saw such a molester of others wives. [3-32-13, 14a]

- Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya Khanda, Sarga 32.

Ravana,’s Brahma armour was able to tank the Sudharsana chakra of Vishnu and Vajrastra of Indra dev

He also observed the two outstretched arms of the gigantic lord of ogres, which were adorned with armlets of gold and resembled a pair of flags raised in honour of Indra which bore scars of wounds sustained in combat with the ends of the tusks of Airåvata, the carrier of Indra, nay, whose fleshy shoulders had been lacerated by the thunderbolt of Indra and which had been injured by the discus of Lord Visnu; which were fleshy and culminated in uniform and well-formed shoulders, were tough-jointed and powerful, bore auspicious marks on their nails and thumbs and were characterized by shapely fingers and palms.

~Sundara Kanda , 10

He defeated the entite army of vanaras using Tamastra

Ravana overpowered Hanuman in wrestling fight and defeated Lakshmana twice using infalliable weapons in fight.

Ravana had defeated almost every warrior from Rama,’ s army except Lord Rama and Hanuman

Ravana equipped with his Brahma armour fought with Lord Rama for seven days non stop.

At one point of time, Rama was said to be eclipsed by Ravana’s valor and momentarily was so overwhelmed that he couldn't even fit the arrows to his bow.

He tore the standard of Indra’s chariot with a single arrow aimed at it, and having felled the golden ensign from the top of the chariot down to the seat of the chariot,

Råvana struck Indra’s horses as well with a series of arrows. Seeing Råma afflicted, the gods, Gandharvas (celestial musicians) and Cåranas (celestial bards) alongwith the devils as also the Siddhas (a class of demigods endowed with mystic powers by virtue of their very birth) and the foremost Rishis became despondent; while monkey chiefs alongwith Vibhishana felt troubled.

Seeing the moon in the shape of Råma eclipsed by the planet Råhu in the shape of Råvana, the planet Mercury stood assailing the constellation Rohini presided over by the god Prajåpati (the lord of creation), the beloved of the moon, spelling disaster to all created beings. Burning as it were in fury, the ocean rose high at that time as though it was going to touch the sun, its mist-wreathed waves turning round.

Looking ashy in colour and assuming a stern aspect, its rays grown faint, the sun appeared with a headless trunk in its lap and united with a comet. The planet Mars too evidently stood assailing in the heavens the constellation Visåkhå, presided over by the gods, Indra and Agni (the god of fire), which is propitious to the kings of Kosala. A bow held tightly in his hands, Råvana, the ten-headed monster, with his ten faces and twenty arms looked like the Mainåka mountain.

Being overwhelmed by the ten-headed ogre, Råma for his part could not even set his arrows to his bow in the forefront of the battle. Knitting his brows, his eyes turned slightly crimson, he gave way to a fierce rage as though he would consume the ogres. Casting their eyes at the countenance of the sagacious Råma, who was provoked to anger, all created beings were seized with terror and the earth began to quake.

Ravan was also shown to compete with Lord Rama himself in archery without the aid of Brahma armour

Seeing him deploying increasing efforts in the struggle, Kakutstha, as if smiling, took up his sharp arrows and loosed them in hundreds and thousands. Observing them fall, Ravana, with his shafts, covered the entire sky and, on account of that rain of dazzling missiles loosed by those two antagonists, it seemed as if a second heaven of weapons had been created and, amongst them, there was not one that did not attain its target, not one, that did not pierce another and not one, that was loosed in vain; and, having collided with one another, they fell to the ground.

Thus Rama and Ravana fought with an increasing supply of weapons and, in the struggle, they showered down their spears without pause to right and left, so that these formidable weapons covered the firmament; Rama striking Ravana’s steeds and Ravana striking those belonging to Rama; thus, both exchanged blow for blow and both, in the height of anger, entered upon a tremendous duel causing the hair to stand on end. Then with sharpened arrows Rama and Ravana continued their combat and, contemplating his broken standard, Ravana was consumed with rage.

Ravana (with his Brahma armour) was the strongest warrior from Ramayana after Lord Rama.

even after his death he was praised by Lord Rama for his bravery

"This demon may be full of unrighteousness and falsehood. But, he was brilliant, strong and ever a brave warrior in battles."

- Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Khanda, Sarga 111.
