Indrajit is one of the strongest demons in the history of Sanatana Dharma and can easily come in top 5.
He had received a lot of boons due to which he was very powerful . He had obtained a boon from Mahadeva that his Tamsi Maya will be infallible and this was the only reason why Bhagwan Sri Ram and Lakshman ji had surrendered to his Nag Pasha astra.
Their surrender to the Nag Pasha served dual purpose :
- Boons of Mahadeva were respected.
- They gave Pakshiraj Garuda ji, who is a great devotee of Bhagwan Vishnu, a chance to serve him.
Meghnad had obtained the infallible Brahmastra from Brahma Deva and he also had obtained a boon from Brahma Deva that he will be invincible , if he performed the Nikumbhila Sacrifice, and one who disrupts his sacrifice will be able to kill him.
All these factors had sky-rocketed the powers of Meghnad making him nearly invincible as boons need to be respected. If there would have been no need to respect the obtained boons, then Bhagwan Vishnu would have no need to incarnate to kill Ravana. He himself or Mahadeva could have easily killed Ravana within moments. Same could be said for Hiranakashiyapu too. If there would have been no need to respect the boon, again Bhagwan Vishnu would’nt need to incarnate as Narasimha.
So only due to the boons did Bhagwan Sri Ram and Lakshman ji surrendered to his Nag Pasha and honoured his Brahmastra . Hanuman ji too had honoured his Brahmastra in Ashok Vatika, who could have easily nullified it.
Now coming to Meghnad , he can be defeated by multiple warriors, but here I will take only Treta Yuga into account.
(i) Angada ji had defeated Meghnad and had destroyed his chariot. Meghnad then had retreated from there.
Angada on his part, who came to annihilate the enemies in that battle-field, struck Indrajit, his charioteer and the horses all at once. While that awful and very intense battle was going on, Indrajit a great trickster, leaving the chariot, with its horses and charioteer killed by Angada, vanished from that very spot itself.Since all the living beings knew the supernatural powers of Indrajit in battle, they were pleased on seeing that highly gifted demon being defeated by Angada.
Source : Valmiki Ramayana Yuddha Kanda Sarga 44.
Even Maharishi Markandeya ji had mentioned this incident in which Angada ji had forced Meghnad to retreat. There is a little difference in the narration of Maharishi Markandeya. And in their battle, Meghnad had hurled a powerful spear at Angada ji to kill him but Lakshman ji had broken it. Other than that , Angada ji had defeated Meghnad all by himself.
Then the handsome Angada, the son of Vali, taking up a large tree, rushed impetuously at Indrajit and struck him with it on the head. Undaunted at this, Indrajit of mighty energy sought to smite Angada with a lance. Just at that juncture, however, Lakshmana cut into pieces the lance taken up by Ravana's son. The son of Ravana then took up a mace and struck on the left flank that foremost of monkeys, the heroic Angada who was then staying close beside him. Angada, the powerful son of Vali, little recking that stroke, hurled at Indrajit a mighty Sal stem. And hurled in wrath by Angada for the destruction of Indrajit, that tree, O son of Pritha, destroyed Indrajit's chariot along with his horses and charioteer. And thereupon jumping from his horseless and driverless car, the son of Ravana disappeared from sight, O king, by aid of his powers of illusion.

Analysis :
- Meghnad was using a chariot while Angada ji was on ground.
- Without using his infallible Tamsi Maya , he was defeated by Angada ji.
- Now , if he was invincible and the greatest, then why did he flee from there.
- So we can say that without his boons , Angada ji was definetly stronger.
- With boons and divine missiles, he can prevail over Angada ji but without them he was defeated ie. Meghnad was superior to Angada ji only in the field of archery.
Conclusion :
If Meghnad does’nt use his illusions and fights with Angada ji ,in any mode of warfare except archery, he will be defeated. Even Sugriva ji , who is the king of Vanaras can defeat Meghnad in the same conditions.
(ii) Indrajit’s battle with Hanuman ji.
Hearing the rattling sound of the chariot and the sound of wooden tomtoms, kettledrums and war-drums as also the sound of the bow-string being plucked, Hanuma sprang up again…………………………………………………………………………………..Making the total target of Indrajit who was skilled in hitting his target useless, Hanuma the great monkey swiftly wheeled about between the arrows.Hanuma, the son of wind-god, again stayed in front of his arrows and stretching out his hands, sprang up.The aim of his arrows getting aborted and even his unfailing arrows falling down, the high-minded Indrajit, who was well-known for hitting his target, got hold of a great thought.Keeping in view of that monkey being incapable of being slain, Indrajit, Ravana's son then formed an idea as to how to resort to capture of that Hanuma the chief of monkey-warriors.

Analysis :
- Hanuman ji was weaponless here, but Meghnad was using his weapons.
- Hanuman ji rendered all his arrows useless.
4. Meghnad manages to capture Hanuman ji , only after he respected Brahmastra.
Realizing that he had been bound by a missile presided over by Brahma the Lord of creation that Hanuma failing to keep his swiftness, considered it to be a favour of Brahma the creator done to him.Knowing it to be a missile presided over by Brahma the creator and consecrated by spells sacred to Brahma, the creator, Hanuma then recollected a boon got by Lord Brahma, the grand father of the entire creation."I have no capacity to liberate from the bondage of the missile due to the power of Brahma the father of the world. Thus knowing the bondage, through the missile presided over by Brahma the self-born creator imposed by the enemy, it must be obeyed by me."Thinking of the potency of the missile and the grace of Brahma, the grandfather of the entire creation enjoyed by him, and thinking about his capacity to liberate from it (which was going to alight on him after a while) that Hanuma obeyed the command of Brahma the grand father of the entire creation. "Since I am being protected by Brahma, Indra and the wind-god, I do not have fear, eventhough I am fastened by the missile.""Even if I were captured by the demons, a great advantage is foreseen. There will be a dialogue with Ravana. Therefore, let the enemies capture me."

"The sight of Ravana the King of demons is difficult to be obtained. Intent on that object (of sight of Ravana), the garden was destroyed by me.""I am incapable of being bound by missiles and nooses even by celestials and demons. This boon came to me also from Brahama only."With a desire to see you the king, I surrendered to the missile. Soon after bound by the demons, I was indeed released from the missile. I came to your presence, prompted by some mission of Rama."

"Knowing himself to be free from the captivity of the weapon according to Brahma's boon, the valiant great monkey Hanuma enduring those demons with self-will who tied his tail with ropes with the intention of burning it, there after burning the city of Lanka while leaving from fire the Seetha of Mithila, got back again to convey the pleasant news to Rama ...
Source : Valmiki Ramayana Bala Kanda Sarga 1.
Analysis :
- Meghnad could capture Hanuman ji , only because he surrendered to his Brahmastra.
- So the credit goes to Hanuman ji’s respect towards Brahma Deva and not Meghnad.
Meghnad’s own words after Hanuman ji was released from the bondage of Brahmastra.
That powerful Hanuma, tied with those chords of hemp and bark, was relieved of the missile, since the bondage of that missile does not indeed coexist with another bondage.Conceiving that Hanuma the foremost among the monkeys, bound with the bark of trees, as having been relieved of the missile, the heroic Indrajit, on his part, then became thoughtful as follows: "A person tied with other means cannot indeed be bound again by the missile.""Alas! My great exploit has been rendered futile. The scope of the mystic formula has not been considered by the demons. Once the spell has been made ineffective, another missile cannot be operative. All of us became jeopardized."
Source : Valmiki Ramayana Sundara Kanda Sarga 48.
Analysis :
- Meghnad himself admits that his exploit has been rendered futile.
- That means Meghnad even lost the credit of producing Hanuman ji before Ravana. That credit goes to the bark of hemps and cords and Hanuman ji’s desire to meet Ravana.
- Some people also tend to ignore the last line , it clearly says that all of us became jeoparized. Now , all of us also means Meghnad. If he was capable of defeating Hanuman ji, then why was he jeoparized?
Meghnad’s and Ravana’s failure to save Lanka from burning .
Having seen the fearful and the terrible act in Lanka done by Hanuma, like Devendra the powerful King of celestials, Ravana with his face descended a little with shame, spoke to the demons as follows:"By him, who was only a monkey, the irresistible City of Lanka was entered into and was over-powered. Seetha the daughter of Janaka was also discovered by him.The thousand-pillared building used as a sanctuary was assaulted by Hanuma. Our most excellent demons were killed. The entire City of Lanka was made turbid.
Source : Valmiki Ramayana Yuddha Kanda Sarga 6.
Analysis :
- Both Meghnad and Ravana could’nt save their home from burning. If they were so capable, then why could’nt they stop Hanuman ji ? Hanuman ji is stronger than Ravana, Meghnad and all the demons of Lanka and this is a fact.
Meghnad’s Brahmastra failed against Hanuman ji.
"This excellent missile, presided over by Brahma the creator, with never-failing strength, was given to Indrajit by Brahma. Honouring it, Rama and Lakshmana the princes fell down in battle. This not a time for despondency here."Both those valiant ones, Hanuma and Vibhishana, together at that time of the night, roamed about in the battle-front, with torches in their hands.
Source : Valmiki Ramayana Yuddha Kanda Sarga 74.
Analysis :
- As said before , Meghnad had the infallible Brahmastra, and this was the reason why Bhagwan Sri Ram and Lakshman ji honoured it.
- But the same Brahmastra had no effect on Hanuman ji, which clearly shows that he could have easily killed Meghnad had he not surrendered to it.
Even Maharishi Markandeya told about the inability of the demons of Lanka to stop Hanuman ji.
And, indeed, it was by means of this jewel that the faultless Sita had been able to support her existence. And the daughter of Janaka further told me as a token from her, that by thee, O tiger among men, a blade of grass (inspired with Mantras and thus converted into a fatal weapon) had once been shot at a crow while ye were on the breast of the mighty hill known by the name of Chitrakuta! And this she said as evidence of my having met her and hers being really the princess of Videha. I then caused myself to be seized by Ravana's soldiers, and then set fire to the city of Lanka!'"
Analysis :
- According to Maharishi Markandeya ji, Hanuman ji willingly surrendered to the soldiers of Ravana and then burnt Lanka infront of their eyes.
In Vana Parva of Mahabharata, Hanuman ji himself said that no demon could match him and he was single-handedly enough to slay Ravana , but just because of Bhagwan Sri Ram’s glory, he did’nt.
Vaisampayana continued, "Thus addressed by Bhima, Hanuman, the chief of monkeys, answered in affectionate words uttered in solemn accents. "O mighty-armed one, O Bharata, it is even as thou sayest. O Bhimasena, that worst of Rakshasas was no match for me. But if I had slain Ravana--that thorn of the worlds--the glory of Raghu's son would have been obscured;--and for this it is that I left him alone. By slaying that lord of the Rakshasas together with his followers, and bringing back Sita unto his own city, that hero hath established his fame among men
Source : KMG Mahabharata Vana Parva Tirth Yatra Parva Section CXLIX.
Hanuman ji had the boon of death upon violation from Devraj Indra , boons of immortaility from Mata Sita and Bhagwan Sri Ram(From UK, even Mahabharata has mentioned it) and indestructibility from weapons by Brahma Deva.
Thereafter, I asked a boon of the lotus-eyed Rama, saying, 'O slayer of foes, Rama, may I live as long as the history of thy deeds remaineth extant on earth!"

He was not man enough to face Hanuman ji.
Beholding that army of monkeys, Indrajit was excited with anger, pulled Seetha by the hair on her head and unsheathed his sword. While those monkeys were seeing, demon began to strike that woman who was placed in the chariot by the dint of his conjuring trick and who was crying "Rama! Rama!"Having spoken thus to Hanuma, Indrajit personally killed that illusory Seetha, who ahd been sobbing all the while, with his sharp-edged sword.
Source : Valmiki Ramayana Yuddha Kanda Sarga 81.
He did’nt answer the challenge of Hanuman ji.
"O evil-minded Indrajit! If you are valiant, fight with me. Coming nearer to Hanuma, you will not return alive.""O foolish fellow! If you enter into a duel with me, fight with your arms. Withstand my force in the battle-field. Then you will be considered as the best among the demons."
Source : Valmiki Ramayana Yuddha Kanda Sarga 86.
Analysis :
- If he could have defeated Hanuman ji , then why did’nt he respond to his challenge ? Was he scared?
Conclusion:
Hanuman ji can easily defeat Meghnad even if he fights using his bow and arrow. He can also defeat him , if he uses his Tamsi Maya and performs Nikumbila sacrifice but out of respect for boons of Meghnad, he would’nt do it. If he wanted to kill Meghnad, he would do it after breaking his Nikumbila sacrifice.
5. Lakshman ji could have single-handedly wiped out the entire Lanka along with Meghnad with his Brahamastra but Bhagwan Sri Ram asked him not to do so. As he did’nt want to kill harmless demons for the sake of only Meghnad.
Then, Lakshmana for his part was enraged and told his brother that he would employ the missile presided over by Brahma for the purpose of killing all the demons. Then, Rama spoke to that Lakshmana, who was endowed with auspicious bodily marks as follows: "You ought not to kill all the demons on earth, merely for the sake of a single demon.""You ought not to kill on this earth one who is not fighting or one who is hiding or one who seeks refuge with joined palms or is fleeing or is intoxicated."
Source : Valmiki Ramayana Yuddh Kanda Sarga 80.
Analysis :
- Bhagwan Sri Ram asks Lakshman ji not to kill all the demons for the sake of one demon ie . Meghnad.
- He asks him not to attack someone like Meghnad(hiding).
His final battle with Lakshman ji was completely one -sided in favour of Lakshman ji. His chariot was destroyed , bows were broken and he was killed. He could’nt break a single bow of Lakshman ji.
(i) Meghnad’s chariot was destroyed and he fled from the battle.
Indrajit, the demon, who was endowed with extraordinary energy, standing on the ground his horses having been killed; was very much enraged and blazed with spirit."You courageously fight, so as to stupefy the monkeys. I, on my part, will return to the battle-field, ascending another chariot.""You act in such a way so that these evil-minded monkeys do not carry on their fight (with me) while enter the city."Thus speaking, Indrajit the annihilator of enemies, having deceived the monkeys, entered the City of Lanka for the sake of getting anther chariot.Arranging for embellishment of a chariot, which was beautiful, decked with gold, furnished with darts, swords and arrows, yoked with excellent horses, directed by a charioteer who could understand those horses properly and could give credible instructions to them, that Indrajit, a conqueror in battle, who was endowed with extraordinary energy, then ascended it.

Analysis :
- He was using a chariot while Lakshman ji was fighting on ground. Clearly shows who is better.
- Yet Lakshman ji destroyed his chariot and he fled to get a new one. He did’nt continue fighting on ground. Was he scared of fighting an equal battle with Lakshman ji?
(ii) Lakshman ji tore his bows.
Then, blazing with hostile anger, Lakshmana, showing his agility of hand, tore Indrajit's bow.Hurriedly, he took another bow and made it ready. Lakshmana tore that bow too of Indrajit with three arrows.Thereupon, Lakshmana struck that Indrajit, whose bow was torn, on his chest with five arrows which were deadly like a serpentine poison. Those arrows, released from that great bow, penetrating through Indrajit's body, fell to the ground like huge red serpents.Ejecting blood from his month, that Indrajit, who had his bow torn, took hold of his excellent bow with the bow-string firmly fastened and which was stronger than the earlier bow.
Source : Valmiki Ramayana Yuddh Kanda Sarga 90.
Analysis :
- Lakshman ji tore two of his bows, while Meghnad could’nt break even a single bow of Lakshman ji.
iii) Lakshman ji finally killed Meghnad.
"O my dear arrow! If Rama the son of Dasaratha has set his mind on virtue, keeps up his promise and is second to none in his prowess, destroy this Indrajit."Thus saying and drawing up to the ear the arrow, which went straight, the heroic Lakshmana released it towards Indrajit. That large head of Indrajit, separated from his trunk and moistened with blood, was seen on the ground, shining like gold.Having been killed, that Indrajit then forthwith fell to the ground, along with his armour and head-protector, with his bow shattered.
Source : Valmiki Ramayana Yuddh Kanda Sarga 90.
Conclusion :
Lakshman ji can defeat Meghnad in any form of warfare. But again he would do it after breaking the Nikumbhila sacrifice.
6. Meghnad had fled from the battlefield when Bhagwan Sri Ram had decided to kill him.
"Scorched by my mystic missiles, he will fall dead on the ground, even if he enters the earth or into heaven or into the subterrranean world or penetrates the vault of heaven and remains completely hidden in this manner."

Guessing the mind of that great-souled Rama, Indrajit turning away from that battle, entered the City.
Source : Valmiki Ramayana Yuddh Kanda Sarga 81.
Analysis :
- If Meghnad was stronger , then why did he flee away from the battlefield?
- Meghnad was also using his chariot while Bhagwan Sri Ram and Lakshman ji were fighting on ground. This shows that Bhagwan Sri Ram and Lakshman ji were superior to Meghnad in warfare skills.
Meghnad returns from Lanka thinking about the deaths of Atikaya, Kumbhakarna etc but still he was not man enough to face them(Bhagwan Sri Ram and Lakshman ji) in a one-on-one battle
Placing an illusory image of Seetha on his chariot and a large army surrounding the chariot, Indrajit intended to kill her.
Source : Valmiki Ramayana Yuddha Kanda Sarga 81.
Analysis :
- If Meghnad was stronger than why did he need to hide behind an illusory image of Mata Sita?
Conclusion :
Bhagwan Sri Ram can easily defeat Meghnad in any forms of warfare and even if he performed the Nikumbhila sacrifice , still he can’t defeat Bhagwan Sri Ram, but again out of respect for the boon of Brahma Deva, he would break the Nikumbhila Sacrifice before killing him.
I am excluding Ravana’s side as there must be a reason for a battle , and why would Meghnad fight against his own army in the first place?
JAI SIYA RAM.
