What are some worst ever matches by any cricket team?

Not just the match, I would say that the series was one of the worst series I have ever seen in my life in terms of the batting display.

India vs NZ, 2003. This series was played just before the world cup. And both the team struggled badly to score runs. Especially Indian team played like amateurs scoring totals of 120, 125 in most of the matches. In the 7 ODI’s Indian team crossed 200 only twice. And in the two tests Indian team couldn't score 200 even once in the 4 innings. And here I will consider the second test match one of the worst display of cricket.

India batted scored and were all out for 99. Only 2 players scored in double digits (Laxman scored 23 and Harbhajan Singh scored 20). Extras were the third highest contributors with 16. The team was bundled out in 38.2 overs.

In reply, Newzealand fared even worse. They got out for 94 giving India a lead of 5 runs. Zaheer Khan, took 5 wickets to give India some hope. But the Indian batting order quashed those hopes by their poor batting display in the second display in the 2nd innings as they were all out for 154 in the second innings. This time 5 players got double digits scores (Dravid scored 39, Sachin 32, Nehra 10, Harbhajan 18 and Sehwag 25).

Newzealand batted better (it was still poor batting display but better in the context of the series) as they chased down 160 losing six wickets and won by 4 wickets.

Now look at the figures of this match-

Rahul Dravid’s 39 was the highest score of the match for both the sides combined!!

3 sixes were hit in the whole match by both the sides with 2 of them but by tailenders (from India the only six was bit by Ashish Nehra, and from Newzealand Darryl Tuffel no 10 player and Craig McMilan)

507 runs at the loss of 36 wickets was the cumulative score of the match. Which means the average score of the match was 127 runs. And everage for runs per wicket was 14 runs.

The series was nightmare for both the teams and particularly for India for lost 7 out of 9 matches.

Who is the most under rated cricketer of Indian cricket team?

 Sourav ganguly.

Only remembered as a great captain with a lot of aggression.

When it comes to batting, he is called the God on off side but none of his shot is ever mentioned. But look at this:

  1. A six over long on: One of his favorite shot to fast bowlers.

  1. Swept the ball: Loved to play it against spinners

  1. Superb piece of bowling: You could never take him light. Had 100 ODI wickets with an economy of about 5 rpo

  1. His test average looks average with a figure of 42.17 but mind you it never was below 40 at any point of his career.

3rd fastest to 6000 ODI runs ( after Viv and Virat), 2nd fastest to 7000 ODI runs ( after AB De Villiers), fastest to 8000 ODI runs, fastest to 9000 ODI runs, 2nd fastest to 10000 ODI runs.

Looks like a lot of qualities is overshadowed by another quality of his own.

Edit: looks like a lot of people don't agree with me. They are right in what they mentioned in the comments section. My point is simply that Sourav Ganguly deserves much more respect as a batsmen than he is getting to the day. No doubt his captaincy, and they aggression which changed the Indian cricket, will be remembered before anything else but while mentioning the batsmen, I would still prefer Sourav in the list at somewhere near the top. He bowls decent spells as well.

Thus I would only like to say that don't exclude him when you are thinking of any ODI team.

Which former batsmen's replacement is the Indian cricket team missing even now?

In Kohli we have a proxy for Sachin. In Ashwin you can find an intelligent Harbhajan. In Pujara and Rahane combined you will see shadows of Dravid but if we talk in particularly about a batsmen whose replacement has yet not been found, my answer would be Virender Sehwag.

Now, this is again debatable with the super form of Rohit Sharma in ODIs, T20s and now in tests but even Rohit Sharma is not the batsman who will hit you with ball 1. Indeed he is a batting giant and score daddy hundreds in ODIs but he take his time initially and that strategy backfires sometimes because the Power Play is wasted. On the brighter side this happens not so often :)

Having said this, Virender Sehwag scored 8124 runs at an average of 50.14 and a strike-rate of 83.06. That strike-rate meant that when he was at the wicket, the match moved forward.

It is incredible that Sehwag achieved so much in his career with minimum footwork but one thing that goes his way was top class hand-eye coordination. If he is in the zone the match may finish on Day 1. Even if he departs early he had capabilities to hijack bare minimum opening session by producing fiery 30s and 40s and in the process a stormy opening for Team India.

Shikhar Dhawan was a pretty aggressive batsman but his strike-rate is 66.94. Still pretty high by Test standards. But Sehwag’s strike-rate was 83.06. When the right-hander from Najafgarh got a start, India would take charge of the game.

Murali Vijay used to take plenty of time. A good opener but remotely closer to Sehwag.

KL Rahul is a player with great technique. He is aggressive too. KL’s inconsistent form has been his biggest enemy and led to his downfall.

Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal are just making baby steps as openers and comparison with Sehwag will be irrelevant

Now with Rohit Sharma 2.0 hopes are again phoenix-ed but it is still a long way to call him Sehwag’s replacement. Screenshots below will help us to understand why?

When Sehwag was in the crease, this type of scorecard wasn't shocking in ODI's.

VB Series. Venue: Australia. Result: first ball Six

The pitch is dangerous, the spinner is a mystery: NOT FOR ME

Team score 141–0, Meanwhile Sehwag

This is before T20 era

We need another 300. Sehwag: Noted
