Why didn't Tum Bin fame actor Priyanshu Chatterjee get enough opportunity in Bollywood to prove his talent even though he did well in his very first film?

Priyanshu Chaterjee had looks of a romantic hero but SRK was ruling the roost as romantic lead so Priyanshu was getting small to medium budget films. He didn't fit the mould of an action hero and his attempt in comedy failed badly in Aapko Pahle bhi Kahi Dekha hai.

There is an interesting connection between SRK and Priyanshu Chaterjee though. Tum Bin had an outstanding soundtrack composed by Nikhil Vinay. Interestingly, Nikhil Vinay composed some of the tunes for a film titled Jadoo, starring SRK way back in early 90’s. The film was shelved after some shooting and the tunes were reused in Tum Bin in songs like Tumhare Siva Kuch na Chahat Karenge and the title song Tum Bin Jiya Jaaye Kaise. Now in the 2000’s the producers of Jadoo decided to revive the film using duplicates, changed script and shadow shots. This money grabbing scheme of a film was titled Ye Lamhe Judai Ke released in 2004 and had two songs Tera Naam Lene ki and Yaadein Teri Yaadein which have the same time as the Tum Bin songs. So even though Tum Bin released earlier the original version is that of Ye Lamhe Judai ke.

Coming back to Priyanshu, the director of Tum Bin repeated Priyanshu Chaterjee after Tum Bin in his next film Aapko Pahle bhi Kahi Dekha hai. This was one of the rare solo hero film of Priyanshu and it failed spectacularly earning merely 1.5 crores on a budget of 4.5 crores. This was followed by supporting roles of Priyanshu in two big films- Dil ka Rishta which was produced by Aishwarya Rai herself and it started Priyanshu and Arjun Rampal (although Arjun Rampal was the lead actor of the film).

This film despite its good music also failed badly (made on a budget of 8.5 crores collected 5.5 crores).

And the next film Pinjar was highly acclaimed and National award winning film but again failed commercially collecting merely 3.50 crores with a budget of 12 crores. These failures caused two things- Priyanshu Chaterjee struggled to get good offers eventually pushing him to do low budget almost B grade films like Woh, Julie, Madhoshi etc. Julie was a commercial hit but the credit went to Neha Dhupia. After Julie, Priyanshu barely had any hits- Bhoothnath, Hate Story 3 and 12th Pass were the only successful films of Priyanshu since 2004 and all of these films had him in small cameo appearances.

Second thing, these films ended the saleability of Priyanshu as an actor. His films could not even earn 50 lakhs . Koi Mere Dil me Hai earned 32 lakhs, Utthan earned 8 lakhs, Gumshuda 9 lakhs and worst of all Majaz e Gham e Dil Kya Karu, a film whose title is longer than its collections. This film earned only 25000 rs!! With such collections his career was by and large over in Hindi films apart from occasional appearances. He shifted to Bengali films where he has done better work. He desperately chose to work in low budget productions which hampered his career badly. And his big films didn't work after the initial success.
