What are some Bollywood films that dared to break away from the typical happy ending and were still successful?

 Anand (1971)

One of the greatest films of Indian cinema, Anand didn't shock it's audience with its ending. In the very scene we are told that Anand is no more. What the film did was that it made the audience emotional with its ending. The climax was so haunting when Amitabh looks at the lifeless body of Rajesh Khanna and begins to shout “Baatein karo Mujhse” (Talk to me) and suddenly the rape starts playing (Babumoshai!!) We all knew how the film will end but still it can make anyone cry even now. Needless to say the film was critically and commercially succesful and even won 6 Filmfares and a National award.

Baazigar (1993)

The film that made SRK a star, Baazigar was one of the biggest hits of the year earning 7 crores nett when the film was sold to the distributors for 2.70 crores. Baazigar ends with the d**th of SRK. Even though he had a negative role in the film the sympathy of audience was with SRK which made the film highly successful and SRK won his first Best Actor Filmfare.

Vastav (1999)

This was an ending that shocked evryone because Bollywood films are not supposed to end like this. In the climax, Sanjay Dutt pleads with his mother to save him from the misery and his mother shoots him fatally. The scene is one of the dramatic highs with excellent performance by both Sanjay Dutt and Reema Lagoo. The film was a hit for its hard hitting content and Sanjay Dutt won his only Filmfare for Best Actor.

Devdas (2002)

Classic love story which has been immortalized so many times on celluloid.. Dilip Kumar’s Devdas was not very successful commercially even though it is one of the greatest films of Indian cinema. Sanjay Leela Bhansali made a colorful and dramatic Devdas which was one of the most expensive films of Indian cinema and at the same time the HGOTY of 2002 despite the fact that it ends on a tragic note. The film won 10 Filmfares and 5 National Awards and was also India's entry to oscars.

Rang De Basanti (2006)

Aamir Khan worked in 2 films in 2006- Rang De Basanti and Fanaa. In both the films his character d**s in the end and both the films were extremely successful. Rang De Basanti was not just a critical and commercial success but also won multiple National Awards and was India's entry to the oscars.
