Are there any asteroids on their way to Earth?

Mark your calendars for April 13, 2029!

Yes... the closest approach is asteroid 99942 Apophis, which is 26.99 billion kg!! Its size is larger than the Empire State Building -> roughly the size of One World Trade Center, New York (the largest building in the Western Hemisphere).

When it was discovered in 2004, the probability of it colliding with Earth was 2.7%! That's a lot, considering the destruction it could cause. While this asteroid's near-Earth flyby is common, this one is very close. (For those who don't know, asteroids and comets, like planets, also orbit the Sun, but they orbit in an elliptical path, and their orbits intersect with those of the planets.)

If it did not collide with Earth or some other celestial body, Apophis's flyby in 2036 would be very far away (but some false sources say that Earth's gravity can cause the asteroid to change its orbit, causing it to crash in 2036, but this is false, as claimed by NASA).

Its closest approach will be on April 13, 2029, at 35,000 kilometers from Earth. That's VERY close.

The Moon is 384,472 km from Earth.

Yes... nothing worse could happen, right? ...but it can (it's actually Friday the 13th!!)

What a coincidence…
