According to Linga Purana, the story of Shri Vishnu offering His eye to God Shiva is ::
There was always a conflict going on between Asuras and Devas. And Asuras defeated almost all Gods and were on the verge to become invincible, as their Guru(teacher) Shukracharya had the boon of Sanjeevani mantra from God Shiva, this mantra made the almost dead alive again.
At that time, all the Devas approached Shri Vishnu, the protector and say, “Hey Shri Vishnu, we are not able to defeat the bad Asuras and many of our soldiers are seriously injured and we are intimidated by the powers of the Asuras, swamy only you can help us, please save us from the Asura’s atrocities”.
Then Shri Vishnu says, “don’t worry Devas, I’ll take care of everything”, and Shri Vishnu starts a rigorous penance to God Shiva to obtain celestial weapons.
He installs a Shiva linga and starts to worship Shiva by chanting Shiva Sahasranama, thousand names of God Shiva. While chanting every mantra, He offers one lotus to Shiva.
God Shiva wanted to test Shri Vishnu’s devotion, so He wantedly makes one lotus disappear. Shri Vishnu doesn’t realise this, He chants the mantras and offers lotus and lastly realises that, one lotus flower was less. Then Shri Vishnu without hesitating, removes one of his eyes and offers it as a lotus to God Shiva( since Shri Vishnu’s eyes are lotus shaped and so He’s referred as Kamala-Nayana, the God whose has lotus shaped eyes or whose eyes are as beautiful as lotus flowers).
Seeing this devotion of Shri Vishnu, instantly God Shiva gives Darshan to Him and gives Him back His eye and grants Sudarshana Chakra, and Shri Vishnu annihilated all the demons with His Sudarshana Chakra.
People should understand that, this story conveys that Shri Vishnu and Shiva are one and the same. This story doesn’t portray Shri Vishnu is less and Shiva is great. They are different forms of the supreme God, ParaBrahman.
Shiva Purana says Shiva is Supreme, Vishnu Purana says Vishnu is supreme and Devi Puranam tells Goddess Shakthi is Supreme. Whether You say Shiva, or Vishnu or Durga, all will help you to connect to your inner consciousness 🙏🏻🙏🏻
