English language movies are made in Bollywood but they are generally low budget films. There isn’t a big market for Indian English language. There have been many award winning English films that won National awards but none of them were commercially successful. Hyderabad Blues was perhaps one of the rare successful English movies but it was made on a shoestring budget of 25 lakhs and earned just 67 lakhs. Finding Fanny is perhaps the highest grossing Indian English language film (I could be wrong but I cannot recollect any other Indian english language indian film to cross even 10 crores).
But even that failed at the box office. Amitabh, Preity Zinta and Rituporno Ghosh failed with The Last Lear. Homi Adjania the director of Finding Fanny had earlier made Being Cyrus with Saif Ali Khan and Dimple Kapadia and that too failed. Years ago Shashi Kapoor had produced and Aparna Sen directed 36 Chowringee Lane, an English language Indian film which won 3 National awards and is considered one of the finest movies of Indian cinema but yet it failed so badly that Shashi Kapoor was in heavy debts. Years later in 2017 Aparna Sen again made an English film Sonata which also failed badly. Shabana Azmi has worked in Sonata apart from other english films like The Morning Raga. Shobana won a National award for English film Mitr my Friend, Konkana won for Mr. and Mrs Iyer also made by her mother Aparna Sen. Aparna Sen is one director who has made English language Indian films like these and 15 Park Aveneu all movies winning National awards but none getting commercial success..
Among male actors, Naseruddin Shah has continued to work in some English Language Indian films like The Blueberry Hunt, The Coffinmaker (with Randeep Hooda), The Mango Dreams (with Pankaj Tripathi). But such films are meant for Film festivals and not commercial release. Just recently Yash made film Toxic in two languages- Kannada and English. Why they decided to shoot the film in English is beyond my understanding but the result was a disaster of epic proportions with the english version earning only 3.16 lakh rupees!!
It is a sad reality but Indians prefer to watch Hollywood films in english but not Indian films. Even the great stars like Mamooty, Amitabh, Shobhana, Deepika, Naseer, Konkana etc couldn't salvage them. Interestingly even SRK and Manoj Bajpai worked in a National award winning English language Indian film In Which Annie Gives it to those ones, at a time when they were unknown. And despite their massive stardom this film remains little known even now.
