Why hasn't Aamir Khan received even one National award for best actor? Will Dangal reverse his fortune?

Aamir Khan has won one National award for acting but not best actor. He won the National award special mention award for QSQT and Raakh. In the beginning of his career he largely did romantic films. The films where he gave commendable dramatic performances include-

Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar (1992)- Mithun Chakraborty won the National award for Tahader Katha. Tahader Katha was more socially relevant film based on the disillusionmemt of a freedom fighter after independence.

Rangeela (1995)- Rajit Kapoor won the National award for playing Mahatma Gandhi in the film The Making of Mahatma directed by Shyam Benegal. The film was an important piece historically so prefered for the award.

Sarfarosh and 1947 Earth (1999)- This time Aamir made socially relevant films but Mohanlal gave a masterclass performance in Vanaprastham. One of the greatest performances in Indian cinema truly deserved the National award.

Lagaan and Dil Chahta hai (2001)- Very curuous to see Murali winning the award for Neythukaran, a left oriented politically charged film, that too during NDA rule and that too at a time when the National award jury was blamed to be politically biased in giving awards (the controversy happened in 1999, 2000 as well as 2002, 2004). I havent seen the film so can’t really comment how good or bad the film was.

Rang De Basanti (2006)- Soumitra Chaterjee after being overlooked so many times and after him rejecting the consolatory National award in 2000, he won the National award for Best Actor finally after so many decades of working with greatest filmmakers of Indian cinema. Anyways Rang De Basanti was an ensemble film with no defined lead actor.

3 Idiots (2009)- Amitabh Bachchan won the Best Actor for Paa. Ranbir Kapoor was also in consideration for Wake up Sid and Rocket Singh. But the steongest contender was Mamooty for Kutty Srank but he lost by 1 vote to Amitabh.

Dangal (2016)- One of the worst choices made in a year. We had so many great options. I was rooting for Manoj Bajapyee to win for Aligarh. We had Aamir for Dangal, Srk for Fan, Sushant for Dhoni all Hindi films (not to forget the films of all other languages) that were way better than Akshay Kumar for a cringe film like Rustom. I wont say that Aamir should have won the award. Dangal was a very nice film but purely as performance i would rate Manoj Bajapyee way above and i also as a performance SRK in Fan was really good.

What are the famous films where Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla acted together before their fallout?

 Juhi Chawla and Aamir Khan pair has worked in 7 films out of which 3 films were major hits, one did average business and 3 were flops/disasters

Their first film together was Qayamat se Qayamat Tak. Many people consider it to be their debut film which is not true. Aamir made his debut with Holi and Juhi Chawla with Sultanat. But they got recognition from this film. QSQT was also the directorial debut of Mansoor Khan, son of Naseer Hussain (Naseer Hussain was on the down with 3 consecutive flops) and cousin of Aamir Khan. This film launched many careers- Aamir, Juhi, Mansoor, Anand Milind, Udit Narayan etc. The film was sold for 1.50 crores and earned 5 crores nett becoming a huge blockbuster. The music of QSQT revived the romantic genre in Bollywood again. The film won 2 National Awards and multiple Filmfare. Aamir Khan won a National award Special Mention for QSQT and Raakh. Both Aamir and Juhi Chawla won Filmfare award for Fresh Talent. Both were also nominated for Best Actor and Actress.

This success was followed by series of duds by the two including Love Love Love which was highly anticipated by the people as it released after QSQT but it failed critically and commercially.

The third film Tum Mere Ho was made by Aamir's father Tahir Hussain and is widely considered one of the worst films of Aamir Khan and though it did average business due to solid initials it is not considered a successful film because of bad reception.

To complete the hattrick of failures we had Daulat ki Jung in 1992 which was also a major critical and commercial failure.

In 1993 Aamir's father Tahir Hussain produced and Mahesh Bhatt directed Ham hai Rahi Pyar ke, which became a critical and commercial hit. Aamir Khan also co wrote the screenplay of the film. The film also won 2 National awards and Juhi Chawla won her only Filmfare for Best Actress. Aamir Khan was nominated for best actor.

In 1994 Juhi Chawla did a guest appearance in Andaz Apna Apna starring Aamir.

In 1995 Aamir Khan did a film with Juhi which he regrets doing. The film was Aatank hi Aatank based on Godfather. The film was heavily panned and failed badly. This is the only A rated film done by the Aamir Juhi pair.

Then came Ishq which was the last time the pair acted together. The two had a major fallout over some practical jokes made by Aamir which made Juhi cry and she skipped the shooting for a day. Rather than feeling sorry Aamir felt Juhi is wasting the time of the production house. Things escalated to the extent that they didn't talk to each other during the shooting and long after that. Till 2002 the duo were not in talking terms. Ishq was a commercial hit and Aamir was nominated for Best Actor Filmfare.

 Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla stopped working together after a petty on-set argument and a series of practical jokes during the filming of the movie Ishq (1997).

Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgn used to play practical jokes on Juhi during the shoot. The pranks even made Juhi cry and their final blowout upset her so much that she refused to show up for the shoot the next day.

Aamir was offended by her absence and in his stubbornness stopped speaking to Juhi completely. He started maintaining a strict professional distance on set and spoke only when a scene strictly required.

The shoot ended without bidding farewell and the feud lasted for about 6-7 years.

Finally, it was Juhi who broke the ice by calling Aamir upon hearing about his divorce with his then-wife Reena Dutta. Juhi's call mended their past differences and Aamir too was deeply touched by her gesture.

Aamir had admitted that the feud was due to his own stubborness and called it one of his biggest emotional flaws.

Before the feud the two were seen together in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Tum Mere Ho, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Love Love Love, Daulat Ki Jung, Aatank Hi Aatank, Ishq and Andaz Apna Apna (Juhi in cameo). After their reconciliation both made separate appearances in Luck by Chance (2009) where Aamir played a brief cameo as himself.

Why did Aamir Khan not do any movies between 2001 and 2005?

 Aamir Khan’s personal and professional life jointly contributed for the gap.

Aamir has always been selective when it comes to films but this was the time when he was going through a personal turmoil. His 16 year married relationship with Reena Dutta was going through a phase of separation which finally ended in 2002.

Aamir was emotionally distressed and took some time away from the industry to handle his personal life.

Professionally, after the release of Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai in 2001, he took a four year sabatical from acting and focused on producing projects like Madness in the Desert (also known as Chale Chalo: The Lunacy of Film Making), a feature length documentary detailing the grueling and inspiring behind-the-scenes making of Lagaan.

In the latter half of the sabatical he was also busy in conceiving Taare Zameen Par which required intensive work besides acting.

Aamir officially signed Mangal Pandey: The Rising during this window and was busy preparing for the role and growing out his hair and mustache. Finally, his acting hiatus came to an end with the release of Ketan Mehta’s historical drama, Mangal Pandey : The Rising which released in 2005.
