Who were the wives of Porus and Chandragupta?

Seleucid Princess (Wife of Sandrocottus)

The information on wives of Porus is not available but he had sons who died in war with Alexander so obviously Porus was not a very young man when he met Alexander and as a king, he likely had many wives but the information on his family is not available.

The wives of Chandragupta Maurya are mentioned in Parishisth Parvan and Mahavansh Tika.

Chandragupta and Durdhara

Chandragupta and Durdhara were King and Queen of the Mauryan Empire. She is said to be daughter of his eldest maternal uncle who had come to Patliputra with the King’s mother. He wedded the daughter of his eldest maternal uncle and raised her to dignity of Queen Consort and she was mother of Bindusara. The name of mother of Bindusara is Durdhara in Parishisth Parvan.

Both sources mentions that Chandragupta had many wives and Durdhara, the main Queen , had died while pregnant due to accidentally eating poisoned food of Chandragupta. Her baby was saved through timely Cesarion. Chanakya used to mix poison in his food to build his immunity but without informing the King.

Nand Nandini (Daughter of Nanda)

A daughter of Nanda was one of the wives of Chandragupta Maurya. The marriage happened after he had defeated the Nanda King. Parishisth Parvan tells a dramatic story that she had fallen in love with him at first sight and he rejected her but later accepted her due to Chanakya. Most likely the marriage was a strategic alliance where chandragupta gained legitimacy in the conquered Empire and she could continue her royal life as a queen. There is no information whether they had any children or not.

Seleucid Princess (in Indian royal dress after marriage to Sandrocottus)

Seleucus and Sandrocottus had a marital alliance after their war. Sandrocottus is identified with Chandragupta Maurya. Seleucus gave up Kabul, Kandhar, Herat and Makran (Baluchistan) and in return got 500 elephants and a marital alliance.

Historians opine that a marriage happened between Sandrocottus and Seleucus and Seleucus gave one of his daughters to Sandrocottus as his wife. The princess was likely quite young when she got married. It was very unusual for a Greek king to marry his daughter to a non Greek king , so, it's likely was deliberately not recorded in Seleucid Chronicled, specially when he was trying to portray himself as supreme King in Hellenistic world.

What were the names of Asoka's wives? Did he have any children from them?

them?

Devi

Ashoka was appointed as Viceroy at Ujjain. While going to Ujjain, he halted at Vidisha and met Devi, beautiful daughter of a merchant. He courted her and brought her to Ujjain where she gave birth to Mahendra and Sanghamitra. When Ashoka usupred the throne, Devi didn't follow him to Patliputra but sent her children with their father.

There is speculation why Devi stayed behind in Vidhisha and one of the opinions is that she didn't want to be ruled by Agramahishi (Chief Queen) at Patliputra and preferred to rule his Harem at Vidisha.

Karuwaki

Karuwaki was second wife and Ashoka and mother of his son , Tivala. Her mention is in Ashoka's Allahabad Pillar Inscription in which it's mentioned all the charities made by her should be in her name.

Karuwaki’s origins are not mentioned in any sources whether literary or archeological. Her being related with Kalinga in any way is a pure myth.

Few scholars associate Karuwaki with Tisyarakshita, Ashoka's last wife and second Chief Queen.

Padmavati

Padmavati was one of the wives of Ashoka and her origins are not known. She was mother of his son Kunala.

Kunala was born the day Ashoka had ended up making 84000 stupas. He was first name Dharmavivardhana but due to his bright eyes resembling a Himalayan bird named Kunala, he was named Kunala. He is said to have eyes like a blue lotus, which might be just a metaphor.

Padmavati can not be Asandhimitra because she was alive when the infamous story of blinding of Kunala happened.

As Kunala was the Crown Prince, Padmavati either was from a very rich noble background or she was his absolutely favourite wife but not noble enough to be raised to the rank of Chief Queen.

Asandhimitra

Asandhimitra was the most favourite and influential wife of Ashoka and he raised her to the rank of Chief Queen just because of her wit, merit and sheer loyalty towards the King.

Asandhimitra is said to have a previous birth connection with Ashoka in which they met Lord Buddha and due to their merit rebirthed as King and Queen.

Due to her merit, Ashoka had become impressed and raised her to the dignity of Chief Queen and it brought jealousy of her co-wives. Ashoka showed them Asandhimitra’s worth when even getting royal seal in a test she refused to become a sovereign. Ashoka through this test showed that he trusted Asandhimitra the most and he had her absolute loyalty.

Asandhimitra had the sole right to give advice to Ashoka and even preach him in philosophy. The privilege of having ear of the King was power enough for her to rule over her co-wives.

Asandhimitra is not mentioned to have any children so it's assumed she either was barren or her children didn't get recognition in history.

Tisyarakshita

Tisyarakshita or Tissarakkha was second Chief Queen of Ashoka. She was made Chief Queen after death of his favourite wife Asandhimitra. She is known to have been highly ambitious.

When she had seen Kunala , she fell in love with his Handsomeness and his eyes attracted her. She asked for love from Kunala but he rejected her calling her a mother and her request a sin. Enraged and feared that Kunala would punish her, she once forged a letter of Ashoka to Kunala (when she got sovereignty for few days as she had saved life of Ashoka from a life threatening disease by finding it would be cured by eating onions. Ashoka as a Buddhist didn't eat onions and she convinced him to eat it as medicines) in which it was written Kunal's eyes should be burnt.

Kunala, who was Viceroy in Taxila was shocked and his ministers refused the order so he out of loyalty burned his eyes. He along with his wife Kanchanmala became a wanderer singing songs of his plight.

When Ashoka heard the songs and realised it was his son, he was grieved and when he got to know Tisyarakshita was the reason, he decided to punish her. Kunala asked for mercy for her but Ashoka eventually burned her alive. In few other versions he forgave her when Kunal's eyes magically returned.

In Parishisth Parvan, Kunala was in Ujjain not Taxila and the queen who blinded him is not mentioned and she did it to make her son heir to the throne and not because Kunala had rejected her.

Ashoka had other wives as well who gave birth to his daughter Charumati, his sons Kustana and Jaluka and others who are not named.

How many wives did Arjun have?

 Draupadi (1st Wife)

While in hiding, the Pandavas reached Panchala Kingdom it was then Arjuna & Draupadi’s marriage happened. Draupadi was the princess of Panchala and the youngest daughter of King Drupada who was born from the Yajna Agni (Sacrificial Fire). It was said that Drupada wanted her daughter only to be married to the 3rd Pandava - Arjuna. So he had kept the hardest challenge in her Svayamvara so that the most talented archer (which was indeed Arjuna at that time) can only win. In her Svayamvara, Arjuna won her and later she became the common wife of the Pandavas as per Kunti’s order. Arjuna & Draupadi’s love story is a topic of debate in the whole Mahabharata. Some says Arjuna loved Subhadra most, some says Bhima loved Draupadi most. But if one follows the original Vyasa Mahabharata he / she will definitely understand that it was Arjuna and Draupadi who loved each other the most. Vyasa didn’t mention directly but it is the story and small accounts that prove their extreme love for each other.

Uloopi (2nd Wife)

In his 12 years of exile after marriage to Draupadi, when he went to a place (said to be now Haridwar), he met Uloopi - a widow and childless Naga Princess who hailed from the underwater kingdom of serpents in Ganga River. She saw him bathing and became infatuated with him. She kind of kidnapped him and took him to her place. She desired to get intimate with him. Arjuna rejected initially because of his vow of celibacy. It is also said that she told Arjuna that if he doesn’t accepts her she will commit suicide. Later Arjuna agreed and in future they both had a son called Iravan. Many consider it as an “affair” but scholars state their union is legitimized through what is traditionally identified as a Gandharva Marriage - a private, mutual agreement without formal rituals.

Chitrangada (3rd Wife)

After leaving Uloopi’s place Arjuna travelled towards the kingdom of Manipura (not the Indian State of now) and there he met Chitrangada - the princess of Manipura (there isn’t much story on how Arjuna met Chitrangada). They married on a condition that - Chitrangada’s son will be the future ruler of Manipura as the king had not any son. Arjuna stayed there for 3 years and after they got a son named - Babruvahana, Arjuna left the place and started his journey again.

Subhadra (4th Wife)

There are different kind of stories about Subhadra’s marriage to Arjuna. After leaving Manipura, Arjuna came to Prabhasa. When Krishna came to know about this he met him and invited him to Dwarka. Arjuna comes there and meets Subhadra. Some versions say that Arjuna was attracted towards her seeing her beauty and abducted her, some says that it was a mutual decision of both of them where Krishna helped. But ultimately after that they get married in a grand ceremony and Arjuna spends his remaining pilgrimage years in Dwarka. Later he took her with him in Indraprastha.
