How does the Gulf of Mexico differ from the Persian Gulf?

 The Gulf of Mexico is a 14,000-foot-deep oceanic abyss. The Persian Gulf is a flooded desert valley so shallow that the Statue of Liberty's torch would rise above its deepest point.

Beyond their shared geographic label, the two water bodies contrast sharply in overall scale. The Gulf of Mexico covers over 600,000 square miles and is shaped by plate tectonics, dropping into deep underwater trenches like the Sigsbee Deep. The Persian Gulf is a fraction of that size at 97,000 square miles. Sitting entirely on the continental shelf of the Arabian Plate, its average depth is just 160 feet (50 meters).

Their climates and water compositions also diverge. The Gulf of Mexico receives immense volumes of fresh water from the Mississippi River system, diluting its salinity. Its warm, deep tropical waters serve as an engine for powerful hurricanes. The Persian Gulf receives almost no rainfall and limited freshwater input, which flows from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers at its northern tip. Surrounded by searing deserts, high evaporation rates make it one of the saltiest marine environments on Earth. Instead of hurricanes, the region experiences fierce sandstorms and seasonal shamal winds.

Geopolitically, both are known for offshore oil extraction, but their topographies create different strategic vulnerabilities. The Gulf of Mexico is a wide, open basin where the United States and Mexico drill extensively without impeding global shipping lanes. The Persian Gulf acts as a global economic bottleneck. Roughly a fifth of the world's oil supply must exit through the Strait of Hormuz—a waterway so narrow that political tension between neighboring countries can instantly spike global energy prices.
