Why do climbers need to be so cautious and know when to turn back when attempting Mount Everest?

 On Mount Everest, the deadliest trap isn't a hidden crevasse or a sudden storm—it's the summit itself. Those blinded by the peak forget that reaching the top is only the halfway point.

To survive the descent, climbers must adhere to strict turnaround times driven by the physiological reality of the "Death Zone."

Above 8,000 meters (26,000 feet), atmospheric pressure drops so low that the air contains about a third of the oxygen available at sea level. In this environment, the human body cannot acclimatize; it is actively dying. Every minute spent in the Death Zone degrades muscle tissue, depletes energy reserves, and starves the brain of oxygen. This hypoxia leads to extreme physical exhaustion and severely impairs cognitive function. Climbers often experience confusion or a dangerous apathy that dulls their survival instincts when they need them most.

Because the body deteriorates rapidly, time is a climber's most critical resource. Mountaineering expeditions establish strict turnaround times—typically 1:00 or 2:00 PM—by which a climber must begin their descent, regardless of how close they are to the peak. Ascending requires immense effort, but coming down requires focus and balance on exhausted legs, often while supplemental oxygen is running out. If a climber pushes past their turnaround time to reach the summit late in the afternoon, they will be forced to descend in darkness as temperatures plummet, increasing the risk of frostbite and fatal falls.

This logistical math is complicated by crowds on the mountain. The final push to the summit follows a narrow ridge where climbers often clip into a single fixed rope. Traffic jams at bottlenecks like the Hillary Step can force climbers to stand still for hours in sub-zero temperatures. A climber who fails to recognize that a two-hour wait will deplete their oxygen supply before they can return to Camp IV risks collapsing on the descent. "Summit fever"—the overwhelming obsession with reaching the top after spending tens of thousands of dollars and months of preparation—can blind climbers to these changing conditions, making the discipline to turn around the ultimate test of survival.
