Janbaaz was directed by Feroz Khan who attempted several times to make Janbaaz (with a different name). He first tried to make it with Zeenat Aman in 1977 and later with Rekha and Parveen Babi in 1983. Finally, he made it with Anil Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia in the main lead.
Janbaaz was heavily inspired by the Hollywood western film, “Duel in the Sun”.
Khan was told by the distributors to cast Sridevi in the film. Sridevi initially rejected the offer as it was a guest appearance and a sensuous role. When Khan spoke in Tamil (Sridevi’s mother tongue) she was surprised by his command over the language and agreed to do the film.
Khan wanted Sridevi to wear western outfits in the film but Sridevi insisted to wear Indian outfits as Dimple and Rekha were wearing western outfits.
The title, “Janbaaz” was registered with writer Salim Khan who gave it to Feroz Khan as he liked it. The Censor Board Certificate misspelt the title as “Jaan Baaz”.
Feroz Khan was not in his actual state of mind during the release of the film. His mother was sick and was about to pass away in the hospital.
Janbaaz was Feroz Khan's fourth commercial success in a row after Apradh, Dharmatma and Qurbani.
