As a species—birds.
Most people see bird species as these beautiful soft creatures that love to sing songs to each other and build pretty nests, even while knowing that many eagles and hawks can be quite violent…
….yet many people still misunderstand just how absolutely savage birds are.
Like—all of them.
The pretty ones. The ugly ones. The non-meat eaters. The pretty blue one you named Sunshine who loves sunflower seeds?
That one too.
Every make and model of bird has this inner dinosaur, which is appropriate given how closely related they are.
I saw a woodpecker bashing in the skull of another bird outside of my house once. My neighbor said he saw a hummingbird stab another hummingbird through the eye, impaling and killing it.
Even mother birds throw weak chicks out of the nest.
Falcons have this special feature called a tomial tooth:
It’s designed to break the vertebrae of its victims —which feels kind compared to what many birds do to their prey.
My mom has pet chickens, who are the closest living relative of T-rex’s, and boy do they live up to the reputation.
They kept pecking one of the chickens in the leg which was bleeding, making it worse and worse until we had to remove it entirely from pen.
The chickens routinely catch small mice and swallow them whole.
How can you not get T-rex vibes from that picture?
I could go on and on with examples but I'll spare you.
Birds are the underappreciated savages of the animal kingdom. Make no mistake. They can, will, and do fuck up any animal they are capable of.
