Definitely this man
Madhur Bhandarkar was one considered the pioneer of real hard hitting films in Indian cinema.
Every film of his unearthed the dark realities of different aspects of the society.
Chandni Bar talked about the lives of s*x workers and underworld. The film won 4 national awards.
Satta talked about the ugly aspects of Indian politics
Page 3 exposed the dark secrets of Journalism. Again three national awards.
Corporate told the story of the corporate life and it's dark underpinnings.
Traffic signal told the story of the lives of street dwellers. 2 national awards including best director for Bhandarkar.
Fashion talked about the dark side of Indian fashion industry. 2 national awards.
Till here, Madhur Bhandarkar was the pioneer of gritty filmmaking while also achieving commercial success with films like Chandni Bar, Page 3, Corporate and Fashion. Such was the impact of his films that people ignored his venture into masala movies like Trishakti and Aan: Men at Work.
But after fashion, Madhur Bhandarkar reached the saturation point of his creativity. Result, his films became more of an expose story than actual compelling story. These movies list its original voice and became a template to expose everything.
Jail was the first film, which depsite it's controversial nude scene failed both critically and commercially.
He followed it with a rom-com Dil to Bachcha hai Ji, which followed his tradition of making A certified movies meant for adults only. The film didn't succeed but was decent film.
Next came his ambitious film Heroine which was in the eye of controversy for replacing Aishwarya Rai for her pregnancy. Kareena Kapoor played the title role of a film actresses, and despite mounted lavishly and featuring a good performance by Kareena, the film was a failure critically and commercially.
And then Bhandarkar reached the ebbof his creatively with the utterly ridiculous film Calender Girls, which looked like a B grade cheap movie full of s**ual inneudoes. The film saw him turning into a voyeuristic maker.
In 2016, Bhandarkar was awarded the Padma Shri, and to return the favour, he made a film against Indira Gandhi named Indu Sarkar in 2017. Unfortunately this film also failed to make any mark.
After a gap of many years, Bhandarkar made his comeback with two OTT releases India lockdown and Babli Bouncer.
Even though they were not bad films these were not of the calibre that Bhandarkar was known for. Bhandarkar started off with a lot of promise and established himself as a voice of great cinema but eventually fizzled out to do mediocre to average films.
