What are the most impressive places that are forbidden to visit?

Fascinating places you will probably never visit in your lifetime:

  • The Coca-Cola vault in Atlanta, USA
  • The Lascaux Caves, France - closed to the public since 1963.
  • The Svalbard Global Seed Vault - an underground vault on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen designed to store seeds of all the world's food crops in a secure location and thus preserve genetic diversity.
  • Fort Knox, United States - military camp used to store American gold.
  • Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, Ukraine
  • Diego Garcia, Indian Ocean - a magnificent island housing a vast American naval and military base, it is closed to the public.
  • Mariana Trench, Pacific Ocean - the deepest known oceanic trench to date.
  • Pravcicka Brana, Czech Republic - one might be tempted to walk on this arch but it is closed to the public due to the risk of collapse.
  • Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan, India - Tourists can visit Bhangarh, but no one lingers there as it is forbidden to spend time there after nightfall due to a curse that is said to hang over the place.
  • Museum of Spy, China - Foreign visitors are not welcome.
  • The Vatican Secret Archives, Vatican City - This may be the world's largest collection of historical objects, but only a handful of people have been allowed to enter it.
  • North Sentinel Island, India – The Sentinelese, who have lived on the island for over 60,000 years, are fiercely opposed to outside influences and remain completely disconnected from the modern world. To respect this isolation, Indian authorities prohibit visits to the island (and residents often kill overly curious visitors).

What impressive facts appear to be "fakes" but are actually true?

  1. The crime rate in the Netherlands is so low that since 2004 23 prisons have had to be closed because there were not enough criminals to fill them.
  2. In the 1990s, Denzel Washington paid the price for a young, aspiring actor who couldn't afford to attend the Oxford Summer Theatre. That young actor was Chadwick Boseman (rest in peace). Chadwick publicly thanked Denzel at the 2019 awards ceremony.
  3. In 1963, a Turkish man was renovating his house. After breaking through a wall, he came across a tunnel. He followed it and discovered the ancient underground city of Derinkuyu, which once had 20,000 inhabitants.
  4. In 2009, autistic artist Stephen Wiltshire succeeded in drawing New York from memory with a pencil after a helicopter flight of only 20 minutes.
  5. Princess Diana was known for ignoring royal protocol. She often took the subway. At theme parks, she refused special treatment and made William and Harry wait in line like everyone else.
  6. Blue Nelson Lake in New Zealand has the clearest water known to man, with a visibility of over 80 meters.
  7. The record for the largest car theft of all time is 1,000 Volvos. The vehicles were ordered and delivered, but the invoice was ignored and remains unpaid to this day. The cars were delivered to North Korea.
  8. In 1963, the Bronx Zoo advertised with the memorable title "The World's Most Dangerous Animal" – a reflection of reality.
  9. Two assailants from New York once attempted to attack former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey (then 60 or 70 years old). Both assailants, as one might imagine, were knocked unconscious. The date and circumstances of the incident are unclear, although Dempsey mentioned it in his book.
  10. My favorite example: In 1996, an avid ornithologist from Devon in England spent a whole year calling owls and recording their reactions, unaware that his neighbor was pretending to be an owl by calling back.

What historical architecture is the most impressive to you?

Forget fancy palaces. The actual intelligent design is the Fujian Tulou.

These were not constructed to appear beautiful. They were built to survive.

It was long ago when under the regime of Genghis Khan life became dangerous. The Hakka people had to relocate southwards. New location, new rivals, no security.

And so they altered their tactics.

They constructed robust and circular constructions such as fortresses instead of regular houses. No more than one gate, no more than a few windows in the outside. When someone attacked, they simply sat and waited by closing the door.

Simple and smart.

Inside, life was normal. Families were cohabiting, stored food and had water. They had everything they needed indoors. They did not have to go out, they could last long.

That is the motto, not to battle every battle--to be difficult to attack.

These buildings not only bewildered outsiders even in the Cold War. They appeared like military bases, when looked at above.

But they were just homes.

Strong homes.

Ultimately, the moral is evident, when life becomes difficult, the most intelligent design prevails.

Not the fanciest.

The strongest.

What is an impressive natural phenomenon that very few people know about?

The passage of these giants in the middle of the coasts of the North Sea.

In the photo a mammoth iceberg almost 50 meters high passing near the Canadian village of Ferryland (province of Newfoundland and Labrador). That area of the Atlantic Ocean is known as Iceberg Alley , precisely because of the passage of these beasts .

About 600 km off Ferryland , one of them struck and sank a famous ocean liner on its maiden voyage on 15 April 1912. The name need not be specified.
