Shreya Ghoshal's first song for a movie is, “Bairi Piya” from Devdas. Her journey from scratch to being the voice of Aishwarya Rai in Devdas is interesting.
Shreya came to Mumbai and recorded a few songs in Marathi and Bengali. Her first recording was the cover version of the Marathi song, “Ganaraj Rangi Naachto”. Her first studio album was released in the year 1998.
Shreya caught the attention of Sanjay Leela Bhansali while performing in the 75th children's special episode of Sa Re Ga Ma.
Bhansali’s mother Leela Bhansali was watching the show and she called Sanjay to watch her performance. Bhansali decided to give Shreya a chance in his film Devdas as Shreya’s voice had the innocence needed for the character of Paro in the film.
Shreya won the show at the age of sixteen. This win served as a major launch-pad for her career.
During the making of Devdas, Shreya was receiving offers from other music directors but it's said that she was in a verbal commitment with Bhansali that her first film rendition and recognition will be as the voice of Paro in Devdas.
The music of Devdas was super-hit and Shreya bagged the National Award for her first song, “Bairi Piya”.
