Every country has rules – written or unwritten – that should be followed.

Since I am fascinated by Japanese culture, I will show you some of the taboos that tourists should absolutely not break there…:

Many Japanese rules are related to death and misfortune.
The Japanese have some rituals that seem a little bizarre to us at first glance.
But perhaps it's the other way around too – although I could hardly name any off the top of my head.

In Japan, you shouldn't sleep with your head facing north.

It's considered taboo.
This stems from the fact that graves are oriented towards the north
(kitamakura = "north pillow") .
This practice is attributed to Buddha, who, according to tradition, entered Nirvana with his head turned north and his gaze directed west. The deceased are meant to follow his example.
Because this sleeping position symbolizes death, people in Japan are careful in their daily lives to avoid sleeping with their heads facing north—if it can be avoided at all costs. And

you shouldn't stick your chopsticks in your rice!

In Europe, it's quite common to place your cutlery in or on your food.
This leads some tourists to simply stick their chopsticks in their rice while they do something else.
However, in Japan, chopsticks stuck in rice are seen as an invitation to the dead to eat.
Crossing your chopsticks over the bowl also symbolizes death and should be avoided.
Furthermore, in Japan, you should never pass food with chopsticks.
This, too, is associated with death, as in funeral rituals, relatives use chopsticks to place the cremated remains of the deceased into the urn.

And remember, the left side of a kimono is always on top!

Should you ever get the idea to put on a kimono (who can actually do that formally correctly?), it's extremely important that the left side is on top of the right.
With both the kimono (着物) and the yukata (浴衣), the left side (from your perspective) is always on top, so you can tuck your right hand in sideways.
Only the dead wear it the other way around.

There are special rules when seeing a hearse .

When you see a hearse, you tuck your thumb, which in Japanese is called
oya-yubi親指 (“parent finger”), protectively into your fist so that nothing bad happens to the parents.

In general, there are special rules regarding the dead: you shouldn't photograph graves because you would disturb the peace of the deceased and attract misfortune.

One should not write one's name in red.

On gravestones, the names of the dead are usually written in black, those of the living in red.
Writing one's own name or someone else's name in red is believed to shorten one's life.
In Japan, people have the custom of erecting their own graves to be ready when their time comes.
They then write their own name in red on the gravestone to indicate that they are still alive. On the day of the funeral, the name is then written in black on the gravestone to signify the person's death.
However, writing someone's name in red can also mean that they will soon go bankrupt.
This may be related to the fact that the word for "deficit" or "debt" is composed of the characters .
Writing a name in red can even indicate that the person is a criminal.
The names of prisoners sentenced to death are written in red on their cell doors.

There are countless other rules to follow in Japan.

You can probably only truly understand them if you grew up there…

What are some rules you should know before going to Dubai that aren't in textbooks?

I am answering as a citizen of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Please keep the following points in mind when visiting Dubai.

1. Do not kiss or engage in public displays of affection. This is a serious offense in Dubai, and if locals or Muslims witness it, they will report you and you will be punished by law and fines. You are in a Muslim country. (Some Europeans may not be reprimanded, but locals will take it aggressively and respond accordingly.)

2. Avoid using abusive language or swear words. No matter what it may be like in America or Europe, using abusive language will earn you disapproving looks. I'm not sure if it's a serious crime, but when talking to locals in the UAE, please avoid using bad language. Locals take it seriously, so be careful with your words. At worst, you'll only face a fine, but please be careful.

3. When going to a hotel, even if you're a couple, don't refer to each other as boyfriend and girlfriend. I want to say this to couples visiting Dubai. Please refer to each other as spouses. In Dubai, marriage is highly valued, and having a boyfriend or girlfriend is not looked upon favorably.

4. Pay attention to your attire. Men can wear shorts, but please do not dress in a disrespectful manner. This means wearing clothing that insults religion, or women wearing skirts or bikinis in shopping malls (especially during Ramadan). In the UAE, this can be punishable by law. Please make an effort to dress appropriately and properly. That's all we ask. (laughs)

5. Drinking alcohol. In Dubai, you can drink as much alcohol as you like at licensed restaurants and hotels. You can buy alcohol at duty-free shops at the airport upon arrival in Dubai, but please do not drink it in public. Getting drunk can cause problems.

6. Trains are separated by gender. This is not surprising. It's just a rule, so please respect it.

7. If you are not Muslim, it is OK to eat and drink during Ramadan . You're welcome. However, please refrain from eating in front of people who are fasting. This is out of respect for the culture and traditions. You can eat and drink, but please do so in a private place or somewhere out of sight of locals. Now, all shops, including restaurants, are open in the Dubai Mall. In this respect, Dubai is less segregated than before.

8. Do not take pictures of locals in the UAE. They find it quite offensive, and taking pictures without permission can lead to problems. It's not that I dislike having my picture taken, but I find it rude to have it taken without my consent. Thank you.

9. Do not attack Islam, the state religion of the UAE. Anyone who discriminates against Muslims or insults Islam in the UAE will be subject to the death penalty or stoning. Strong measures will be taken against this, so do not take this lightly.

Additional information: Locals make up only 15 percent of the UAE's population. The rest are Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Indians, Iranians, Egyptians, and a significant number of Filipinos. Strictly adhering to the rules is very difficult, and the rules in Dubai may be relaxed to benefit foreigners. But as a word of caution, please respect our laws and rules. It's about mutual cooperation.

Which are few rules in Cricket that most of us are unaware of?

 1. Cricket Has Its Own Penalty Decision

If the cricket ball touches the helmet or any other unnecessary kit equipment of the keeper kept on the ground irrespective of the force it touches the helmet, it is declared as PENALTY and the batting team is awarded with 5 runs.

2. Don't Be A ‘Guran' from Lagaan

A batsman will be declared out if willfully he hits the ball with his bat more than once in a single ball bowled by bowler. Inadvertent double strikes are given not out.

3. Another One In The Spirit Of The Game

You cannot have more than 2 fielders behind the square on the leg-side in all forms of the game. This is done keeping in mind the spirit of the game. Because the bowler can have fielders on both side behind the batsman and can keep on delivering bouncers.

4. Mankading Vs Shaken Spirit Of The Game

Vinoo Mankad in a Test series against Australia in 1947/48 started using this bizarre technique to run out the batsman at the non-striker end. He made sure that the non-striker is out of the bowling crease and before he would start his action he would run the batsman out. This peculiar gesture of his where he would dismiss a batsman was not appreciated by all. But the rule that clearly says that the runner has to be inside the crease before the bowler has bowled. This way of dismissal is criticized by most cricket gurus. Here's an example.

5. Ariel Stoppage = Dead Ball

Whether technology is a boon or a bane will always be a haunting topic for every generation to discuss. But cricket has an answer to this question. If a ball hits the spider cam floating over the ground, then it is considered a dead ball. Even if is sure shot six or catch, it is considered as a dead ball.

Spidercam denied Dhoni a humongous six.

Similarly, Docklands stadium in Australia is covered with roof, so if a ball hits the roof it is given as a dead ball. This charity game between Australia and World XI saw this bizarre occurrence.

6. Game without Bails.

It is allowed to play without bails on the stumps. This may happen when the wind is very strong and the bails aren't able to stick to the stumps.

Hope you like it!!!
