Why is the Boeing 777 so successful?

The 777 was a big hit as the first twin-engine jet with the capacity to challenge the 3 and 4-engine jets of the time. The Boeing 777 was the first twin-engine plane to carry over 300 passengers in a typical configuration. Twin-engine planes have less mechanical parts and are more fuel efficient. Boeing had a much different vision than Airbus, for they envisioned a two engine jet that would be highly efficient and could carry upwards of 300 passengers.

The reason that so many airlines wanted the 777 was because it could travel extremely long distances, even longer than the 747, and it could carry almost as many passengers in the -300ER variant, while being extremely fuel-efficient. The 777 also had a very long ETOPS rating, which was eventually raised by the FAA only a few years after the launch of the aircraft. The Boeing 777 offers the best of both worlds - long range and good payload capabilities. Because with two engines, it can carry over 300 passengers upwards of 8,000 nm. It is therefore better matched with the route capacity desired by most airlines, and its direct operating cost per available seat mile is Less than that of the A380 and the 747–8.

The passenger version of the 747–400 was discontinued in 2005, the same year that the 777–300ER entered passenger service, because both planes have the same capacity and range. The Airbus 350–1000 is comparable to the B777 but Boeing 777 hit the market 20 years earlier than the A35X. It accumulated over 20 years of flight experience proved to be a reliable jet and versatile enough to go to any international airport.

During the design phase of the 777 project, representatives from the customers were directly involved in the decision making. The 777 project involved one of the earliest uses of computer aided design. So confident were they in the efficacy of collaborative design by computer, that they skipped entirely the mock-up phase. To date there have been more 777s built than 747s and the profit margins on the 777 were apparently enormous.

Which actors or actresses had the biggest downfall after having a successful career?

 Gracy Singh.

She worked in a few TV shows before getting a dream launch opposite Aamir Khan in his home production - Lagaan (even though she did minor roles in Gulzar's Hu Tu Tu and played Kajol’s sister in Ham Aapke Dil me rahte hai but Lagaan was her launch as an actress. The film was a success and one of the most acclaimed film of all times. The film won 8 national awards (which is still a record ) and 8 Filmfares. She won the Zee cine award, Star Screen awards etc for Best debut and nominated for Best Debut Filmfare. The film went to Oscars. What all a debutante can ask for.

In 2003. She had 3 releases, out of which two films were highly acclaimed and won National awards. The first was Gangajal starring Ajay Devgan and directed by Prakash Jha. The film was a success and won the National award for other social issues. Her other film was Munna Bhai MBBS, another cult classic which won hearts, money and awards. The film won the National award for best popular film providing wholesome entertainment and also won 4 Filmfares. She had 3 releases and all of them cult classics and National award winners.

But then she had a downfall so bad that nobody understood why? I never understood why after working with Ajay Devgan, Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt and also Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor in her fourth film Armaan, she chose to do continuous films alongside Aftab Shivadasaani, Arbaaz Khan, Tusshar Kapoor. Suddenly the business of her films fell from 29 crores of Lagaan to 7 crores for Armaan (featured a stellar cast of Amitabh, Anil and Preity Zinta who stole the show making Gracy Singh the second lead), 2 crores for Muskaan (a dismal failure despite its terrific music) to 70 lakhs for Wajah (again two heroine film) to 58 lakhs for Shart (two heroine film). By 2005 she had officially relegated to B grade cinema with films like Ye hai Zindagani with Pravin Dabas in lead role. And this transition was completed in 2008 when she worked in the film Deshdrohi with the legendary actor KRK. From there none of her films earned even a crores or even 10 lakhs. Her film Aseema earned a grand total of 50 thousand rupees at the box office.

According to her she was not comfortable doing glamorous roles which limited the kind of roles she was getting. In an interview she said that she was very possessive about her clean image. Also she was more focused on her dancing (she is a trained Bharatnatyam and Odissi dancer). Lastly she became more and more inclined towards spirituality with open association with Brahmakumaris. After 2008 many of her films were mythologicals or religious films like Barbareek, Ramka Peer, Jai Santoshi Maa etc. So she ignored her film career and then Bollywood ignored her like she never existed. A few years ago she worked in a TV show Jai Santoshi Maa playing the title role. Anyways it was really sad to see an actress with such great potential losing out and doing pathetic roles that ruined her career. It is difficult to understand what made her choose those roles that she did after such great start?

Why is Dr. Rajkumar one of the most successful actors the world has ever seen?

Dr. Singanalluru Muthuraju (Known as Dr. Rajkumar, Annavru, etc in Karnataka) is very easily one of the most versatile and successful actors the world has ever seen. A few reasons which support this:

  • His career spanned from 1954 to 2000, just short of half a century, which might seem normal to most people, considering the fact that there are many people who have had careers much bigger than that, but the awe-inspiring truth is that he acted in a lead role in every single one of his movies.
  • He has acted in 208 movies, sometimes releasing ten movies in a calendar year during his peak years (the 50s and the 60s). Almost every single one of them have been declared a super-hit by Box Office. This is a rare achievement for not only an Indian Actor, an Actor in the world level as well.
  • He has acted in innumerable genres of movies: Mythological, Social Drama, Spy, Romance, Philosophical, Thriller, among others. He has managed to put life into every role that he has portrayed.
  • He is not only an actor, but also a very good playback singer. He has sung close to 300 songs for his movies, and for others’ movies as well. He has also won a National Award for Playback Singing for his beautiful “Naadamaya Ee Lokavella” from the movie Jeevana Chaitra. The evergreen song has impeccably been sung in Raga Thodi, a proof of the Carnatic Classical maverick that was Dr. Rajkumar.
  • He followed a very austere lifestyle, and was very fit and ahead of his times. When heroes danced around with pot-bellies, Dr. Rajkumar impressed everybody with his Yoga Postures and a perfect body that a man of his age can have.
  • In spite of his greatness, he was a very simple man with little ambition. His down-to earth nature fetched him millions of supporters who revered him as their “Annavru” (Elder Brother). He, in turn, called his fans “Abhimani Devarugalu” (Likening his fans to Gods). Dr. Rajkumar never ventured into politics, even though he knew that he could become the Chief Minister of Karnataka without having the slightest of problems. Such was his greatness, that his is the only autograph that Superstar Rajinikanth has ever asked for in his life.
  • He was the first actor in India to get a Honorary Doctorate for Excellence in Acting. He was awarded the Doctorate by the University of Mysore. He is the only Kannadiga so far to win a Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He is also a recipient of the Padmabhushana Award, given by the Government of India.
  • Even though more than a decade has passed after his death, he is worshipped like a God in Karnataka. He is an inspiration to every budding film artist there is in the Kannada Film Industry. His legacy can never be replaced.
