What are the contributions of the cholas to Karnataka?

Cholas have the habit of building temples wherever they go because they were hard core spiritual people who were continously engaging in religious activities and all.

The even dig lakes in the regions they go and hence in their rule of the regions of than Karnataka, they have built many temples and also have constructed many lakes in Karnataka especially in Southern Karnataka where they had ruled for a longer period of time( 987 to 1118CE) by overthrowing the western Gangas.

They even contributed donations to the temples built by other Kings and they were patrons of Shaivism

Most of these temple have been built during the time of Arulmozhi Varman aka Raja Raja Chola, Rajendra Chola and Rajadhiraja Chola cause we get this information from the Tamil inscriptions that are found in the temples in Karnataka.

Cholas are said to have left inscriptions by recording everything from place names to the contributions made in all the places they ruled unlike other kingdoms and this gives us a clear view on what all they did.

Pancha Lingeshwara Temple,Begur.

We can find Chola temple mainly in Southern Karnataka in districts such as Bangalore Urban, rural Bangalore, Ramanagara, Kolar,Mysore, Chamrajanagar,Tumkur,Dakshina Kannada and in Mandya and they even created temple towns in Karnataka region just like in Tamil region.

Actually much research isn't done on the Chola temples in Karnataka and I got many information shared by people in Facebook through the pages I follow rather than in Google.

A ruined Chola Temple and Mantapa in Mysore.(Name unknown)

Bangalore region alone has nearly 25 temples built by Cholas and two of such temples are very near to my place Indiranagar- The Chokkanathawamy Temple dedicated to Perumal( The Shila is brought from the Nepal) of Domlur and the Someshwara Temple in Ulsoor dedicated to Lord Shiva which houses the 68 Nayanmars of Tamil country- Both these temples are just near 2 kms from my house which I usually visit. Even the Madiwala lake is constructed during Chola era as per the inscription in the Madiwala Shiva Temple.

Mukthinateshwara Temple, Binnamangala

Nearly 100+ temples are there in Southern Karnataka which has been built Cholas in their brief period of rule which is really astonishing. Even in Northern Karnataka here and there we can Chola temples like below one.

Kalleshwara Temple,Davangere,North Karnataka

From one of the inscription we can also get to know that the Bangalore region was called as “Illaippakka Nadu” .

Southern Karnataka was called as “Thadikaipaadi" by Cholas and they had renamed it to Raja Raja Chola Valanaadu and still some names of places named by Cholas are still is use in Karnataka!

Someshwara Temple, Halasuru

I will share some links of the temples constructed by Cholas in the region.

What are the contributions of Telugu cinema to the Indian film industry?

Telugu cinema has contributed a lot to Indian film industry. It has also given outsiders who are not Teluguites a career in the film industry . Let's look at some of its contribution :

  • First Mythological movie

The 1957 movie was the first Mythological movie in Indian cinema and it was a trend setter movie in Indian cinema. It can be termed as a movie which is way ahead of its time.

  • Career for other language people

Actors like Siddharth has got more hits in Telugu cinema than in Tamil cinema. In one of his interviews he tells that wherever he goes he introduces himself as a Telugu actor.

Prakash Raj is known more for his work in Telugu film industry than for his work in Kannada film industry.

Most of the heroines in Telugu film industry in the 21st century are outsiders. Most of the high budget movies in Telugu which are released in multiple languages will feature other language people too.

So overall Telugu film industry has always welcomed outsiders and treated them just like a native.

  • Remakes

The 2002 film Jayam was remade into Tamil and the actor was since then called Jayam Ravi.

Tamil actor Vijay has a lot of remake movies from Telugu:

Ghilli remade from okkadu

Aathi from Athanokkade

Pokkiri from pokkiri

Vaseegara from Nuvvu Naaku Nacchavu

Badri from Thammudu

Hindi film industry in the past 20 years has been making a lot of remakes which are originally made in Telugu:

Salman Khan's

Wanted is a remake of Telugu film Pokiri.

Ready is a remake of Telugu film of the same name. This movie has been remade into other languages too.

Shahid Kapoor's

Kabir Singh is a remake of Telugu film Arjun Reddy. He is also set to make a remake of another Telugu film called jersey.

Akshay Kumar's

Rowdy Rathore is a remake of Telugu film Vikramaarkudu.

Ajay Devgan's

Son of Sardaar is a remake of Telugu film Maryaada Ramana. This movie was remade into 5 languages.

There are many more such movies and this list is huge.

  • Singers

Both SPB and Janaki were singers in other South Indian languages and have sung a lot of songs in those languages too.

and last but not the least is Baahubali which was amongst the highest grossed Indian movies and it disproved the common belief of people that regional languages cannot make it into the highest grossed Indian movies.

So this is an overall glimpse of Telugu cinema though there is a lot more to talk.

How did Shankar Nag's contributions, like Malgudi Days and Sanket Studios, shape the Kannada film industry and its move to Bangalore?

Firstly Shankar Nag(1954–1990) and Anant Nag (1948 - present) weren't Kannadigas their mother tongue was Konkani, so Konkanis. They were just born and brought up in Karnataka ( Nagarakatte , Uttar Kannada district I believe).

Later grew up in Mumbai. Shankar Nag was a bank employee in Mumbai.

Shankar Nag decided to direct Malgudi days in Hindi not Kannada. He knew Kannada market was weak back then compared to Bollywood and the film industry was not popular outside Karnataka.

Shankar Nag’s biggest contribution to Karnataka was establishing sanket studios in Bangalore ,the former capital of Karnataka, Now Mandya is the capital of Karnataka and biggest city in Karnataka). Sanket studios now isn't active. However it didn't shape kannada film land.

Shankar Nag's memorial kannada movies were Janma Janmada Anubandha (1980) and Accident (1984). Both these movies were ahead of their time and were good scripts.

Even if Shankar Nag was alive I don't think he would have saved Kannada film industry.
